Japan Display Inc. has unveiled the development of the world’s first 17.3-inch 8K resolution LCD display capable of running at a smooth frame rate of 120Hz all crammed into the same size as the standard monitor commonly used for the video image production. Admittedly, this is another pivotal moment for the industry itself and manufacturers of high-resolutions displays in particular, as now more than ever before it’s safe to assume that we are not too far away from the moment when we’ll be carrying around consumer devices with a similar resolution in our pockets.
For now, it’s clear that ultra high-resolution displays shouldn’t be necessarily 70-inch displays that take up a whole wall in order to display life-like images that are double the size of the latest UHD monitors and TV sets available today. We are talking about the whopping 7,680 x 4,320 resolution and 510 pixels per inch density which is definitely a precedent and unheard technical achievement, especially when it comes to a device with this size.
According to the Japanese manufacturer, this next-generation 8K technology is going to be highly beneficial not only for video image productions and filmmaking industry but also used for medical applications and gaming PC monitors which require high-resolution and increased depth in image quality.
Honestly, I would not dare to forecast how or when this crazy high-resolution race is going to end, but it’s clear that more and more often we are hearing about technical breakthroughs that are aggressively pushing the boundaries of the industry’s status quo, thus quickly shifting the paradigm in this highly competitive market segment and it’s pointless to say that Japan is yet again ahead of the competition.
For now, 4K is just more than enough for the majority of filmmakers who finally have decent acquisition tools capable of providing enough resolution, detailed imagery and more accurate colour reproduction than ever before. Yet, for some manufacturers, it seems that this is just not enough.
Actually, we shouldn’t be surprised that according to the roadmap for 4K/8K Television & Broadcasting of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, it is expected that commercial 4K broadcasting over CS, CATV and IPTV to start sometime in 2015.
Experimental 4K/8K broadcasting over BS is anticipated in 2016, with commercial 4K/8K broadcasting over BS aiming to be active no later than 2018. The 17-inch 8K prototype display will be showcased during CEATEC JAPAN 2015 held at Makuhari Messe, Japan, in collaboration with NHK. More technical specifications are yet to be revealed.
