Sony Launches New 50-150mm F2 GMaster Lens

Sony has announced the release of the FE 50-150mm F2 GMaster lens, which it claims is the first telephoto lens to feature a maximum focal length of 150mm with a fast F2 aperture.

This lens delivers performance comparable to that of a prime lens while offering the flexibility of a telephoto zoom, making it suitable for a wide range of high-performance applications without sacrificing resolution or detail.

While this GMaster lens is designed for cinematic and video production in mind, it performs impressively well for still applications such as portraits, weddings, sports, and other events.

The standout feature of this GMaster lens is its speed. With a constant F2 aperture throughout its zoom range, the FE 50-150mm F2 GM lens provides an all-in-one solution, allowing photographers to minimize the number of lenses they need without compromising depth of field or low-light performance.

Its speed, enhanced by an 11-bladed aperture, produces smooth, circular bokeh and a shallow depth of field.

“By delivering a constant F2 aperture across its zoom range, this lens offers Sony Alpha users an all-in-one solution that rivals multiple prime lenses, like a 50mm, 85mm, and 135mm,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics Inc.

“This innovation enhances the versatility that professionals require to capture extraordinary imagery in both photography and video.”

The lens features an optical design that includes two extreme aspherical (XA) lens elements, two Super Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, and three standard extra low dispersion elements.

This combination ensures sharp, high-contrast images while effectively minimizing aberrations throughout the zoom range.

Additionally, the lens elements are treated with Sony’s proprietary Nano AR Coating II, which is uniformly applied to the entire lens surface to effectively reduce ghosting and lens flare in backlit conditions.

The front element also has a Nano Fluorine coating to repel dust, grease, and other contaminants.

The lens incorporates Sony’s floating focusing system, offering a minimum focusing distance of 0.4 meters at the wide end, with a maximum magnification of 0.20.

It utilizes four extreme dynamic (XD) linear motors, which enable fast and precise subject tracking while remaining quiet in video mode to avoid unwanted noise during recording. Breathing compensation support, available on select Sony Alpha cameras, is also minimized.

With an internal focusing zoom array, the lens maintains compact and portable ergonomics, making it easier to use handheld or on a gimbal. The overall length is 200mm (7.8 inches), and it weighs 1340 grams (47.3 ounces).

Pricing and Availability

The Sony FE 50-150mm F2 GMaster lens will be available in May 2025 for $3,899 in the US, through Sony directly or its network of authorized dealers in North America. There is no information yet on its worldwide rollout.
