At this year’s NAB Show, Blackmagic Design made waves with a slate of significant announcements, including the reveal of the new upgraded PYXIS 12K digital film camera, a powerful update through DaVinci Resolve 20, and more than 20 additional new products and software enhancements across its lineup.

Introducing the PYXIS 12K

The standout announcement is the new Blackmagic PYXIS 12K, an advanced full-frame digital film camera designed for high-end cinematic production.

Standing on the shoulders of its popular PYXIS 6K modular box style cinema camera, the new variant features a 36 x 24mm RGBW 12K sensor (12288 x 8040) and supports 3:2 Open Gate, 6:5 full-height anamorphic, and 9K Super 35 formats, giving filmmakers maximum flexibility in post-production and framing.

The camera can capture full-resolution 12K footage at up to 40 frames per second, or shoot at up to 112 fps in 8K, all recorded in Blackmagic RAW.

With support for EF, PL, or L-Mount lenses and full compatibility with Blackmagic Cloud for global media sync, the PYXIS 12K is a future-proofed, production-ready powerhouse that can also double as an integrated live streaming conduit for platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter).

The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K will be available in July 2025, priced at $4,995.

To complement the PYXIS 12K, Blackmagic Design also announced two key accessories: the Blackmagic PYXIS Pro Handle and Blackmagic PYXIS Pro Grip, both launching in July.

The PYXIS Pro Handle ($895) includes a top handle with a built-in OLED viewfinder and microphone, perfect for handheld or run-and-gun shooting, while the PYXIS Pro Grip ($119) adds a secure side grip with an integrated hand strap, transforming the PYXIS into a robust solution for fieldwork and broadcast use.

Unfortunately, Blackmagic has not announced an updated Pocket Cinema Camera, and as the PYXIS platform continues to mature, it seems increasingly unlikely that they will advance the line to a new generation..

Other hardware announcements included the new Blackmagic Cloud Backup 8, which is a rack-mounted media backup solution that accepts 3.5-inch hard drive slots and uses 4 high-speed 10G Ethernet connections for maximum performance.

Retail price is $1495.
