Nikon Unveils the Second-Generation Z5 II Mirrorless Camera

Nikon has enhanced its mid-range full-frame mirrorless camera lineup by introducing the Z5 II Mirrorless Camera.

With the integration of advanced AI tools, the Z5 II aims to elevate content creation through improved autofocus, enhanced low-light performance, cinematic-inspired presets, and more.

At the core of the Z5 II is a highly sensitive 24.5-megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) CMOS image sensor. This sensor captures intricate details and textures, even in low light, while effectively minimizing noise.

With Pixel Shift technology, the Z5 II can record 14-bit 6K RAW still images and oversampled 4K video at up to 60 frames per second with a 1.5x crop, or 4K at 30p with no crop at all.

The camera is the first of its kind to feature an AF-A focus mode, which automatically switches between AF-S and AF-C focus modes based on subject movement or changes in composition.

This design allows you to maintain focus on a subject without needing to make setting adjustments on the fly.

The camera also has a 3D tracking AF mode which keeps the target subject in focus while on the move, or changing direction erratically.

This allows for subject tracking, even at high burst speeds, for higher performance situations such as shooting sports, animals or other fast-moving subjects.

For video recording, the Z5 II utilizes Nikon’s N-Log, providing flexibility in color grading and an extended dynamic range.

The video codec can also accommodate LUTs developed by RED for an additional cinematic effect.

Other available options include 12-bit N-Ray, 10-bit H.265, and 8-bit H.264.

The Z5 II allows users to zoom in on 4K video up to 2x in-camera, producing a Full HD image without sacrificing quality – a common issue when zooming in.

This feature is especially beneficial when using prime lenses to capture dramatic shots of subjects.

Other notable features include a product review mode that switches focus seamlessly between the user and other subjects, a bird detection mode that identifies and tracks animals in flight, and Nikon’s classic Rich Tone Portrait mode for accurate skin tones and textures.

The camera also offers skin softening capabilities that smooth the skin while preserving the details of hair, eyes, and facial features.

The Z5 II boasts real-time effects from 31 built-in color presets and allows users to download custom imaging recipes.

Additionally, Nikon’s Pixel Shift shooting mode captures high-resolution 96 MP images that showcase professional depth and texture after processing with Studio NX image processing software.

This camera can also live stream high-quality video when connected via UVC/UAC compliant USB ports, transforming it into a high-resolution webcam.

The Z5 II comes equipped with dual SD card slots, headphone and external microphone ports, providing content creators with all the necessary tools to produce professional-looking still images, high-resolution videos, and live web streams.

The Nikon Z5 II Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera will be available this month at a price of $1,699.95 for the body only, or $1,999.95 bundled with the Nikkor Z 24-50mm F4-6.3 lens.
