Nikon RED Updates Komodo Firmware, Drops the Price Again

Less than six months after reducing the price of the RED Komodo 6K Camera, the company, in collaboration with its Nikon partners, has lowered the price again, making it as affordable as Blackmagic’s entry-level Cinema Cameras.

A new firmware update introduces several features from the higher-priced KOMODO-X platform, enhancing the user experience.

OS Tweaks

The 1.8.3 firmware update for the KOMODO provides new user pages that are accessible through the KOMODO LCD touchscreen. Users can now adjust settings more easily, reducing calibration time and allowing for quicker setup at the start of the shooting day.

Additionally, users can utilize KOMODO’s top-mounted custom buttons to switch between standard speed and high frame rate, as well as access other key functions without having to navigate through the on-screen menu.

This improvement creates a more user-friendly experience for a camera system that has previously been known for its steep learning curve.

A Second Significant Price Drop

“Our decision to lower the price of the KOMODO was influenced by a recent surge in interest in RED and our technologies following the acquisition by Nikon,” stated RED Digital Cinema CEO Keiji Oishi.

“This marks the beginning of a new chapter as we introduce members of our recently combined family to the power of RED. We remain committed to delivering the most advanced, highest-quality professional image capture solutions and to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in filmmaking.”

Making the camera easier to use will be a tremendous benefit for new owners, especially with this second steep price drop in six months. At a new retail price of $2,995, the RED Komodo presents a fantastic and affordable option for users eager to enter the RED ecosystem without breaking the bank.

This price reduction opens up access to more advanced professional features, including global shutter, high-resolution capture, 16-bit REDCode RAW, RED Color Science, and a broader variety of lens options (including Nikon Z Mounts).

These enhancements allow users to attract better clients and pursue higher-budget projects, thanks to RED’s cinematic appeal.

In addition to the standalone body price, RED is offering the KOMODO Starter Pack, which includes an RF-to-EF mount lens adapter, a variable ND filter, a 512GB CFast card and card reader, wing grips, and two REDVOLT batteries.

There’s also the KOMODO Production Pack, which adds an expander module and an Outrigger Handle with remote control start/stop support on the grip.

The convergence of Nikon and RED continues to benefit content creators looking to elevate their work in the professional cinematic world.

By adding Nikon’s Z-mount to its lens options, lowering its overall price, bringing RED color science to the Nikon platform, and introducing Nikon RAW into RED’s IPP2 Workflow, Nikon is indeed changing the game in two categories of video production. And we’re here for it.
