It appears that we may not see a fourth-generation Osmo Pocket camera for some time. But that isn’t stopping DJI from giving the Osmo Pocket 3 some legs.
The drone and camera company has enhanced the compact video camera with an update designed to extend its usability well into the future.
The main improvement in Firmware Version 01.06.08.04 is support for DJI’s lossless video codec, D-Log M, in webcam mode.
This uncompressed codec enhances dynamic range and provides a 10-bit color gamut, resulting in richer skin tones.
Users can utilize the codec for both live video streaming and traditional recording. However, the codec may produce a flat and washed-out image, necessitating color correction during post-production.

Another noteworthy feature is breathing compensation, which smooths transitions and prevents unwanted shifts in the lens’s field of view, keeping the viewer engaged in the scene.
With this compensation, the Osmo Pocket 3 captures more refined cinematic footage without slight movements when switching between foreground and background subjects.
Additionally, the new Med-Tele Mode extends the focal length in 4K by 2x. Previously, the camera relied on digital cropping to enlarge the image, which can lead to a loss of detail and a fuzzier image.
The new 2x Med-Tele mode offers lossless zoom at a 40mm equivalent, a significant enhancement over the current 2x digital zoom, preserving image detail and minimizing artifacts.
When users add the optional 15mm widescreen adapter from the Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo, they gain access to three different focal lengths.
This versatility allows for the creation of 4K content without sacrificing image quality or resolution.
For 1080p filming, users can stack the digital zoom on top of that to achieve a 4x or 80mm zoomed image for even greater reach, although some loss of detail may occur.
However, there are drawbacks: Active Track is disabled in Med-Tele mode, ISO is capped at 1600, and this mode isn’t available in Night mode.
Users must enable the mode before starting to record, as it cannot be switched on afterward – at least not yet.
Additionally, the Med-Tele mode is only accessible in standard video mode, excluding HLG HDR or D-Log M.
Other features include background file downloads via the Mimo App, the ability to take video screenshots and save them as static or live photos, and various bug fixes and housekeeping updates.
Installation
To download and install the update, users can access Firmware Version v01.06.08.04 through the DJI Mimo app, which also has a new version available on the iOS and Google Play app stores.
Once users download and install the latest app version, they should connect the Osmo Pocket 3 to the DJI Mimo app to update the firmware following the on-screen instructions.
It is crucial to have a fully charged device, but DJI recommends that users maintain a minimum battery level of over 15% during the update, which takes approximately 2 minutes.
