Panasonic Unveils Second Generation S1RII Mirrorless Camera

Panasonic has officially introduced the long-awaited Lumix S1R II Mirrorless Camera, establishing it as the company’s new flagship model.

Designed to meet the diverse needs of content creators, this camera supports 8K video and hybrid content production, excelling in capturing both stills and video.

Equipped with a newly designed 44.3 MP CMOS image sensor and a high-performance L2 processing engine, the Lumix S1R II showcases impressive feature upgrades.

These include Panasonic’s sophisticated 779-point Phase Hybrid Autofocus system, AI-driven subject detection and tracking, and five-axis image stabilization rated for up to eight stops. Additionally, it delivers stunning 10-bit 8K video capabilities.

While tailored as a hybrid platform for creators across still image and video disciplines, the S1R II truly excels in its video functionalities.

It offers 8K video recording at up to 30 frames per second, with support for 10-bit ProRes Raw, Open Gate 6.4K at 30p, and up to 120 fps in 4K.

The camera boasts up to 15 stops of dynamic range, accommodating a variety of challenging film lighting scenarios. Its in-body image stabilization and Active IS options further enhance usability.

The camera also features film simulations and color grading options, including Real-Time LUTs, False Color, and a new Cinelike A2 photo style.

Additional features include waveform and vector scopes, real-time LUT support, and false color menu options. The camera also supports H.265 and All-I recording.

On the still image front, the S1R II can capture images up to 177 MP via a new high-resolution mode and employs sensor-shift technology for composited stills. With the ability to shoot at up to 40 fps in AF-C/AF-S modes, it also offers enhanced noise reduction at high ISO settings.

The camera can detect and track humans, animals, and vehicles, featuring improved eye, face, and body detection for both stills and video.

For audio, the S1R II introduces a new 32-bit float system that processes audio onboard, complemented by an optional DMW-XLR2 adapter for a professional audio experience.

It includes dual media card slots for CFExpress Type and SD memory cards and supports tethering with CaptureOne. Additionally, it can record directly to an optional SSD drive via USB.

The S1R II is fully compatible with all L-Mount lenses, including those crafted by Leica and SIGMA. It features a 4-axis 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen LCD with a resolution of 1.89 million dots, while its OLED electronic viewfinder boasts a threefold resolution of 5.76 million dots for ultra-sharp and color-accurate previews.

Weighing just 1.75 pounds, the camera is built to be moisture and dust-proof, as well as freeze-resistant. Other connectivity options include full-size HDMI, USB-C, and XLR, along with various audio inputs.

The Panasonic Lumix S1R II is available for pre-order at a retail price of $3,299.99 from Panasonic’s authorized retailers. Shipping is expected to start in late March.
