FilmConvert’s New ARRI Alexa 35 Camera Pack Has Been a Long Time Coming

FilmConvert has announced an exciting new ARRI Alexa 35 Cinema Camera pack.

This pack has been thoroughly tested and is compatible with both FilmConvert Nitrate for color grading and Cinematch for camera matching across a variety of platforms.

The ARRI Alexa 35 boasts up to 17 stops of dynamic range, thanks to its 4.6K Super 35 CMOS image sensor. Its recent increase in popularity comes from a new, cost-effective basic tier sale that offers flexible short- and long-term licensing options.

The base model closely resembles the ALEXA 35 Premium Model and supports ProRes at up to 60 frames per second in 4K widescreen with a 10-bit HDR color space. Additionally, it accommodates CDL and 3D LUTs and provides expanded ISO modes, along with various independent monitoring outputs.

A significant advantage of the ARRI Alexa 35 is its recently announced flexible licensing strategy.

Shooters can choose an all-you-can-eat Premium licensing option for the camera’s lifetime, or opt for a pay-as-you-go option with month-to-month or annual subscription rates.

ARRI states that these new options will make the camera more accessible for entry-level content creators while also future-proofing the ALEXA 35 as new features are introduced or unlocked as necessary.

Camera operators can hold off on using certain licenses, such as Open Gate/Anamorphic mode until they require them or develop the skills needed to fully utilize the camera’s capabilities.

This approach provides greater opportunities for content creation as users advance in their careers.

The impact of this new scheme on supporting applications, such as FilmConvert’s color grading or camera matching, is likely to be minimal to nonexistent.

This is good news for content creators looking to harmonize the camera’s color space and digital grain structure with footage from other platforms, such as mirrorless or DSLR cameras, or even other cinema cameras.

The new camera pack supports ARRI’s Log C4 color profile, enabling shooters to maximize every stop of dynamic range. Cinematch employs unique sensor match algorithms to align footage more closely with ARRI’s cinema-grade color science.

Both platforms utilize the camera pack’s tools to accurately translate unique grain structures based on actual scans of film stock, enhancing the overall grade to achieve a more cinematic presentation.

Moreover, Cinematch has been updated to support the new color science tools in Adobe Premiere Pro 25.2.

This update allows users to work with various color spaces, including Rec.709, Rec.2100 HLG, Rec.2100 PQ, and ACEScct.

Additionally, it supports output color spaces such as Rec.709, Rec.2020, Rec.2100 HLG, and Rec.2100 PQ.

Download and Installation

To access the latest profile, users can utilize the in-app camera pack downloader included in the FilmConvert plugin within their video editor.

A manual installation method is also available for download from the FilmConvert Nitrate website. Cinematch users must download the complete app and reinstall it to access the latest packs.

If you haven’t yet tried FilmConvert or Cinematch, both apps offer a free, fully functional trial for you to explore before making a purchase.

You can download them from the FilmConvert Nitrate and/or Cinematch websites.
