Blackmagic has announced that its flagship URSA 12K LF Digital Cinema Camera has received approval for all projects destined for Netflix.
Now included in the Netflix Approved Camera List, the URSA 12K LF joins a select group of cinema cameras that have successfully passed Netflix’s stringent review for image capture requirements and best practices.
Other Blackmagic models on this official list include the URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 and the URSA Mini Pro 12K OLPF.
Netflix employs a dedicated camera lab facility for thorough testing and evaluation.
The platform examines new cameras against strict criteria, including dynamic range, color reproduction, noise performance, sensor readout speed, compression, chroma subsampling, bit depth, and even factors like camera stability, reliability, power management, thermal management, editing software support for chosen codecs, and media reliability.
Obtaining approval is not automatic; cameras that do not meet the standards may only be used for 10% of footage capture until they can be improved to pass the necessary tests.
The Blackmagic URSA 12K LF is designed to integrate seamlessly into an end-to-end post-production workflow.
It is the first digital cinema camera to offer high-performance onboard storage and high-speed networking for camera-to-cloud applications.
Featuring a groundbreaking RGBW 36x24mm RGBW image sensor, the URSA Cine LF has larger photo sites that yield an impressive dynamic range of up to 16 stops.
With 8TB of onboard storage, the URSA Cine LF supports up to four hours of original camera file storage in Blackmagic RAW 12K format and up to 20 hours in 4K resolution.
The camera captures a full 3:2 open gate image and supports anamorphic shooting with de-squeeze factors of 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.66, 1.8, and 2x.
Thanks to a built-in optical low-pass filter with IR support, the URSA Cine 12K LF is optimized for Blackmagic’s fifth-generation color science, delivering richer and more accurate colors and skin tones.
Users have multiple power options, including an 8-pin LEMO and a 3-pin Fischer connection for both 24V and 12V systems, along with a 250-watt power supply and a B-mount battery plate.
The camera also includes 12G-SDI, 10G Ethernet, USB-C connections, and XLR audio for enhanced functionality.
Additionally, the Blackmagic URSA 12K Cine LF features swappable lens mounts for PL, LPL, EF, and Hasselblad lenses and can connect to the cloud via WiFi with SRT streaming.
With a competitive retail price of $12,995.00, users can start deploying the URSA 12K Cine LF on Netflix projects immediately. Test results data can be found on the official Netflix Camera Approved List website.
