Blackmagic Design has announced a price reduction for its Pocket Cinema 4K camera to $995.
This micro four-thirds cinema camera was groundbreaking in its time, but with the availability of a new 6K version and the market’s gradual embrace of an 8K standard, its relevance may be waning.
But thanks to this price decrease, don’t count out this plucky cinema camera just yet.
“The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K has been popular among customers as both a digital film camera and a studio camera when used with ATEM Mini switchers.
It offers a wide dynamic range for digital filmmaking and incorporates DaVinci Resolve color science, complete with a built-in color corrector, tally, and remote control for live production,” said Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design.
Featuring a 4/3 image sensor with a resolution of 4096×2160 and up to 13 stops of dynamic range, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera serves as a reliable option for content creators transitioning away from DSLRs and mirrorless systems in favor of a more professional setup.
Six years later, the BMPCC4K stands as a solid backup for those who have upgraded to the higher-resolution 6K model.
With advanced Blackmagic Gen 5 Color Science, 3D LUTs, HDR, and Blackmagic RAW, this camera captures cinematic images complete with time code and other metadata.
Its massive five-inch LCD touchscreen allows for precise focus checks. The BMPCC4K, with its multifunction grip, enables fine-tuned adjustments across a range of professional settings and can shoot dual native ISOs up to 25,600, delivering impressive low-light performance with minimal noise.
The camera promises accurate skin tones and faithful color reproduction, featuring a dynamic 12-bit gamma curve that captures more detail in highlights and shadows.
It supports writing to either SD cards or external SSDs, facilitating faster file transfers and extended interview durations. The camera can capture at 60 fps in 4K, 2.8K80 Raw in 4:3 Anamorphic, or 120 fps in 1080p HD windowed.
Grant Petty further explained that improvements in manufacturing processes allowed the company to reduce the production costs of the Pocket Cinema 4K by $300.
They are excited to pass these savings on to customers at a lower price. “We have worked diligently on our manufacturing processes and have even lowered production costs.
Now, we can offer a fantastic solution that brings digital film quality to everyone!”
These recent manufacturing tweaks have resulted in price reductions across many products in the Blackmagic lineup.
However, one can’t help but wonder if the more modular design of the Blackmagic Pyxis will set a standard for the future or perhaps even lead to a new generation of Pocket Cinema Cameras that could be announced soon.
After all, NAB is just four months away, when new camera announcements are typically made.
In the meantime, users can acquire a 4K Pocket Cinema Camera for as low as $995 moving forward, making it a great option for either B camera work or a gentle move beyond consumer-grade DSLRs.
Moreover, the camera comes with a full copy of Davinci Resolve Studio 19, making the value even better!
