Nikon has introduced significant updates to the Z9 mirrorless camera and its NX MobileAir companion app, enhancing their appeal for professional filmmakers.
These updates include advanced features such as adjustable shutter angles on the Z9 and wireless camera-to-cloud integration with Frame.io via the NX MobileAir app and Android-based smartphones.
With Nikon’s acquisition of RED, professional-grade features from RED’s architecture are now becoming integral to Nikon’s platform.
The latest firmware update, version 5.1.0, exemplifies this integration by providing filmmakers with tools to achieve greater creative control.
Among the highlights is the addition of a new shutter mode, which allows users to adjust the shutter angle in 15 steps between 5.6° and 360°.
This eliminates the need to manually recalibrate the shutter speed when frame rates change, ensuring optimal motion blur for any setting.
The firmware also includes improvements to the Zebra settings, enabling users to customize the color and transparency of the zebra pattern display.
It further enhances usability by allowing adjustments to metadata display positions and font sizes for the histogram and waveform screens.
These changes improve visibility and provide clearer information, even in high-contrast or brightly lit environments.
The NX MobileAir app update transforms any Android-based smartphone into a powerful gateway for wireless integration with Frame.io, facilitating seamless camera-to-cloud workflows.
The app now enables real-time transfer of full-frame video files and optional proxy files directly from the camera to the smartphone and onward to the cloud.
This automatic process rivals the efficiency of dedicated modules like the Atomos Connect, while still allowing users the option to manually upload files.
Operators can also filter select video files for upload based on criteria such as ratings or file format.
Frame.io’s latest update extends compatibility to other Nikon cameras, including the Z8 and Z6III, creating a seamless cloud connection for live event coverage and real-time post-production workflows.
This improved integration optimizes efficiency for shooters and enhances collaboration across teams.
