Angelbird Evolves Beyond 8K With New CFExpress 4.0 Media Cards

Angelbird is keeping pace with the rapid digital revolution by releasing a new Type A CFExpress 4.0 memory card.

Designed for use with 8K cinema cameras and beyond, the AV Pro CFE 4.0 Type A cards are optimized for Sony cameras, making them ideal for video recording and extended burst photography.

There’s also a next-gen card reader to handle the heavy lifting of data transfer. Let’s take a closer look.

The Angelbird AV Pro CFExpress Cards offer consistent read and write speeds of up to 800/1700 MB/s, with burst speeds reaching up to 1800 MB/s, thanks to a PCIe 4.0 x1 bus.

These cards maintain impressive speeds when paired with Angelbird’s Stable Stream technology and compatible memory card readers, such as the Angelbird PKT.

The AV Pro cards also feature advanced thermal management protection to prevent overheating during data transfer and writing. This technology allows for minimal power drain, extending camera use, though it consumes slightly more power than some competitors.

Additionally, the cards are designed to be robust enough to withstand extreme conditions, operating in temperatures ranging from 10°F to 162°F.

They come with a three-year warranty when registered through the Angelbird Personal Service Portal within 30 days of purchase. In the event of data loss or a corrupted card, data recovery support is also available.

The PKT memory card reader utilizes a Type A Type 2.0 memory bus and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface via a recessed USB-C port. Capable of transferring data at speeds up to 20 GB/s, the PKT is also backward compatible with older USB connections.

It’s important to note that to achieve maximum transfer speeds, users will need a computer or host device certified to support the 20 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 connection.

While the reader is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and 4, Apple devices using the current Thunderbolt/USB4 specification do not support the 20 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, limiting speeds to 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2. Nevertheless, that is still quite fast.

The card reader features an LED write-protect switch that locks data to prevent accidental file deletion or formatting, along with a white LED that flashes red during data transfers.

Pricing and Availability

The Angelbird AV Pro CFExpress Type A memory card is available for preorder in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities, with prices ranging from $199 to $499.

The Angelbird PKT memory card reader is available with red, green, or yellow accents and can be pre-ordered at a retail price of $99.99 and includes a USB4 cable and a protective PKT cap.

Preorders are being accepted now, with shipping anticipated later this month.
