FUJIFILM Is Developing its First Cinema Camera

Fujifilm has finally entered the professional cinema market with the launch of a new large-format cinema camera called the GFX Eterna.

This camera is designed to capture rich and true-to-life cinematic visuals with enhanced flexibility, aiming to compete in – and potentially revolutionize – the digital content creation space.

As the demand for various types of video production grows – ranging from feature films and short films to documentaries and web content – there is an increasing need within the film industry for high-quality videos that can be produced quickly and affordably.

According to the product announcement, the GFX Eterna, currently in development, aspires to drive a new era of filmmaking and aims to contribute to the creation of timeless cinematic masterpieces.

The GFX Eterna cinema camera is inspired by its namesake motion picture film and is built around the same 102 MP CMOS II HS image sensor found in Fujifilm’s high-end GFX 100 II mirrorless camera.

This Eterna sensor will be 1.7 times larger than a full-frame image sensor and will feature the X-Processor 5 image processing engine.

Fujifilm plans to combine the new Eterna camera with its Fujinon lenses and develop a new category of optics based on the GFX platform.

To support this, the company is also working on a power zoom GF G mount lens optimized for the Eterna system.

The first lens in the HF series is expected to be a 32-90mm T3.5 Power Zoom lens, which will include a G to PL mount adapter to accommodate popular Panavision and ARRI-style lenses commonly used in film production.

Pricing and availability

Currently, there are no details regarding pricing or availability, apart from the announcement of its GFX sensor and processor combination.

However, since it uses the same processor as the GFX 100 II, it’s reasonable to assume that the camera will achieve similar performance, likely capturing 4K 10-bit video at a minimum of 60 fps.

Additionally, those who have seen the camera up close describe its boxy design as similar to that of a Sony FX6.

The camera features ports for HDMI, SDI, Genlock, USB-C, and Ethernet, along with power connections for a 2-pin LEMO DC connection or a V-Lock battery plate.

To ensure the Eterna has the best chance for success, Fujifilm plans to conduct extensive and rigorous field testing of the new camera before its launch while simultaneously expanding the GFX System with supportive lenses and products.

The goal is to quickly offer a competitively priced system that attracts professional content creators, much like its mirrorless camera lineup has done in the consumer market.

Fujifilm will display a prototype of the GFX Eterna during Inter BEE 2024 at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center in Chiba City, Japan, from today until November 15th.

The camera is expected to launch sometime in 2025. Additionally, considering the GFX100 II medium format mirrorless camera retails for $7,499, it is reasonable to expect that the Eterna will be priced above that point, although the exact amount remains uncertain.
