Sennheiser Joins the Personal Wireless Mic War

Sennheiser has announced a new wireless microphone system designed to compete with DJI and RØDE in the personal wireless microphone market.

The Profile Wireless Microphone system aims to deliver high-quality audio, making it ideal for freelancers, content creators, and videographers who want to enhance their audio without excessive costs.

Hendrik Millauer, Product Manager for Broadcast and Film at Sennheiser, stated, “We cannot imagine content creation today without compact 2.4 GHz mic systems.

I am proud that Sennheiser is adding an all-in-one microphone system to its portfolio that truly makes a difference for creators and videographers.

We’ve equipped the Profile Wireless with many exciting features that will help users capture audio more reliably, for longer periods, and in a more flexible manner than ever before.”

The Profile series features two-channel wireless transmission across the 2.4 GHz band, ensuring secure transmission of 24-bit, 48kHz sound with a 78.5 dB(A) signal-to-noise ratio. notes Blake.

“This not only reduces the risk of clipped audio but also maximizes the usable dynamic range of the capsule.”

The Profile transmitter boasts a wireless range of up to 245 meters (804 feet) and includes a backup recording function with 16GB of internal memory to save audio when the signal weakens or the wireless transmission is interrupted due to interference (common on the 2.4 GHz band).

There is also a Safety Channel Mode to record backup audio at a lower volume to help protect against clipping.

The system can store up to 30 hours of internal recordings at this quality.

Designed to be more compact than competitors, the mini mic transmitters can be easily attached using included magnetic mounts or standard removable clips.

This dual mounting option allows for a more unobtrusive setup without compromising audio quality.

Additionally, the Profile receiver is equipped with a built-in gyro sensor that can automatically rotate 180° to maintain a clear and reliable wireless signal.

What sets the Profile series apart, according to Sennheiser, is its long-lasting performance.

The Profile system can operate for up to seven hours of continuous use, which can be more than doubled when using the charging bar, also capable of functioning as a handheld source for reporter-style interviews.

Other features include a compact OLED touch display with indicators for two-channel levels, battery power, and wireless signal strength.

There is also a lockable Lavalier connector and a dedicated headphone jack for monitoring audio on the receiver.

Pricing and Availability

The Sennheiser Profile Wireless Microphone system is priced at $299 and includes a receiver, two transmitters, a charging bar, dead-cat furry windscreens, cables, and a soft carrying case. It is expected to ship between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025.

The sad part is, that if this product had been announced a few years ago, it would keep up in the wireless mic market. But without 32-bit floating point recording, Sennheiser has some work to do to play catch up.
