DJI Launches Consumer-Friendly New Drone Controlled without Remote Control

DJI has just introduced a new drone designed for adventure seekers, which can be controlled without a remote and launched from the palm of your hand.

The DJI Neo weighs just under 5 ounces (135g), making it the company’s lightest and most compact UAV to date. It offers full gesture control, AI-based subject tracking, and 4K video recording capabilities.

Ferdinand Wolf, Creative Director at DJI, stated, “The DJI Neo aims to provide people with the latest technology in the smallest form factor, enabling them to capture their daily lives as cherished memories, safely and effortlessly.”

The DJI Neo Drone operates with near-full automation, with a single touch setting the mode. It can identify and track subjects, capturing up to 4K stabilized video at 30 frames per second or 12 MP stills.

Once finished, users can simply extend the palm of their hand and the drone will gently land.

Featuring a singular-axis mechanical gimbal, the Neo can navigate through level 4 wind conditions, utilizing image stabilization modes such as Rock Steady and Horizon Balancing to maintain the shot. It can compensate for image shake and horizon tilt to within ±45°, ensuring smooth and stable footage in windy conditions.

The drone can hover steadily due to its infrared and monocular vision positioning system, capable of maintaining stability even in wind conditions up to Level 4. It also supports the automatic Return to Home (RTH) mode.

The Neo can be controlled via WiFi through the DJI Fly app on a smartphone, various remote controllers including the RC-N3, RC Motion, and DJI Goggles, and even through voice control.

The control range is approximately 50 meters for smartphones, extending up to nearly 10 KM when using the RC-N3 controller. Users can customize tracking angle and distance settings.

Additionally, the DJI Neo utilizes AI-driven subject identification and tracking, ensuring the subject remains within the frame regardless of movement. It also supports DJI’s popular Quick Shot modes, including Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Boomerang, and Helix.

Other features include 22GB of internal storage for saving up to 40 minutes of 3K video or 55 minutes of 1080p HD video. The drone can wirelessly transfer data to a mobile device via WiFi and the DJI Fly app.

It can also record audio from a smartphone app or DJI Mic 2 via Bluetooth connection, eliminating propeller noise and merging the audio track with captured footage.

The drone’s propellers are fully wrapped within drone guards to protect them from impact or obstacle damage, and to protect the user’s hands when it lands on the palm.

Pricing and Availability

The DJI Neo will be available for pre-order in the United States starting today, September 5, and priced at $199 (standalone) and $289 for the Neo Combo, which will include the drone and three additional smart batteries.

Moreover, the drone will be showcased in the DJI booth at IFA 24 in Berlin from September 8th to 10th, 2024.  DJI is also letting people fly it on-site, which is pretty cool.
