Tamron Goes Zooms Out for Nikon’s Z-Mount Cameras

Tamron has recently unveiled an updated iteration of its highly sought-after 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Zoom Lens optimized for use with both full-frame and APS-C Nikon Z-mount cameras.

This latest version shares the same fundamental design as its predecessor tailored for Sony E-mount cameras, initially launched in 2022, and is positioned as a versatile all-in-one solution for photographers seeking a single, multipurpose lens to carry on their photography expeditions.

Comprising 24 elements arranged into 10 groups, the lens incorporates two XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), three LD (Low Dispersion), one GM (Glass Molded Aspherical), and one Hybrid Aspherical lens element, effectively mitigating aberrations, including axial chromatic aberrations.

All lens elements feature Tamron’s advanced BBAR-G2 anti-reflective coating to combat lens flare and ghosting, with the front element additionally treated with a fluorine coating to protect against water, dust, and oil.

The lens is designed with a 9-bladed aperture to create a smooth, circular bokeh in the background. This effect is most noticeable when the aperture is stopped down by two stops from its widest setting.

Additionally, the lens features Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) focusing motors for fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus, as well as a vibration compensation system to minimize camera shake at longer focal lengths.

Additionally, the lens features a rapid zoom ring with a 75° arc of rotation and provides support for Fast Hybrid Autofocus and Eye Autofocus tracking, ensuring versatile and reliable focusing performance.

It also offers in-camera lens correction functionalities for addressing shading, chromatic aberration, and distortion. Notably, the lens utilizes AI-driven algorithms to determine optimal compensation characteristics for videography at focal lengths of 100mm or less.

Despite its expansive 8x zoom ratio and a maximum aperture range of F4.5-6.3, the 50-400mm lens remains impressively lightweight at just 2.6 pounds, making it highly portable for various photography scenarios.

Further underscoring its versatility, the lens boasts a minimum focusing distance of 9.8 inches (.25m) at the wide-angle end and 59.1 inches (1.5m) at full telephoto, with a maximum magnification of 1:2 at wide-angle and 1:4 at telephoto.

Despite its broad focal range, the lens maintains a relatively compact form factor, measuring only 7.3” (185.8mm) in length.

Additional features encompass AF/MF custom switch boxes, a focus set button, a zoom lock switch, and an angle of view ranging from 46°48′ to 6°11′ for full-frame mirrorless format.

It can also be updated using TAMRON’s Lens Utility software tool, which can also customize the lens for certain conditions.
