Sony has announced the second-generation FE 85mm F1.4 G-Master II Lightweight Telephoto Portrait Lens for its full-frame E-Mount Mirrorless and cinema platforms.
The lens is designed to be an ideal optic for portrait, wedding, travel, and cinematic video photography, as it is compact and lightweight without sacrificing performance.

The FE 85mm F1.4 G Master lens is the 76th addition to the E-mount catalog. It promises significant improvements in resolution, accurate color, smooth bokeh, and fast focus.
This lens fully leverages Sony’s full-frame mirrorless Alpha cameras and Sony cinema cameras like the Sony BURANO.
A cinematic design
The FE 85 II has advanced optics, including two extreme aspherical and two extra-low dispersion lens elements, which promise corner-to-corner resolution and minimal chromatic aberration.
The lens also features an 11-bladed circular aperture, providing a soft, cinematic bokeh that is iconic in G-Master lenses.

Sony has also improved the lens’ autofocus capability with near-silent XD linear motors, providing up to three times faster internal focusing and high-speed acquisition and tracking of moving subjects.
The lens tracking performance has been improved by up to seven times that of the original FE 85. Focus breathing has also been minimally reduced, thanks to in-body focus breathing compensation.

The FE 85 II is designed with two programmable focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch to change on the fly. There is also an independent aperture ring and Linear Response focus control button for additional control.

Each optical element is coated with Sony’s Nano AR II coatings, which inhibit ghosting and lens flare to provide sharp, clear images. The front lens element also has a fluorine coating to protect against dust, oil, and fingerprints.
Weighing just 642 grams (22.7 ounces), the FE 85 II is 20% lighter and 13% smaller by volume. It has a diameter of 84.7 mm, a filter diameter of 77mm, and a length of 107.3 mm.

The Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM II will be available for preorder at a retail price of $1799.99 from Sony Direct and its network of authorized dealers throughout North America. It is scheduled to ship in September 2024.
