Western Digital has introduced the development of high-capacity 4TB and 8TB microSDUC media cards, along with what the company is presenting as the world’s first 16TB M.2 portable SSD drive.
These innovations are targeted towards applications that require higher capacity, such as extended 8K video content, gaming, and AI, which are all expected to demand increasing storage space.
Rob Soderberry, the executive vice president and general manager of Western Digital’s Flash Business Unit, emphasized the significance of aligning the product and technology roadmap with the evolving AI environment, stating, “As AI technologies advance and become increasingly integrated into the world around us, storage demands will continue to grow.
Western Digital’s comprehensive approach delivers power-efficient, high-performance, and high-capacity solutions tailored to our customers’ individual needs.”
At the annual Future Memory and Storage Conference in California, Western Digital introduced new storage products that highlight the company’s strategy for delivering high capacity and performance with UHS-I speeds for modern smartphones, gaming devices, drones, and cameras.
Currently, they offer a 1TB microSD card, and they have announced upcoming microSDUC cards with capacities of 4TB and 8TB. These new cards will be the first of their kind for the microSD card specification, allowing action cameras and drones to seamlessly operate in the 8K domain without storage limitations.
In addition, Western Digital will soon offer high-capacity 16TB portable and Desk Drive SSDs, designed to be the world’s first at these capacities, allowing creators to access a robust storage solution for managing large volumes of data at standard speed rates. The company is also showcasing BiCS8 performance for PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs, catering to workstations, laptops, and AI-powered PCs.
The drive towards even higher capacity media cards is primarily propelled by the extensive language sets utilized by Artificial Intelligence. Moreover, the prevalence of 8K in mobile-centric action cameras necessitates smaller form microSD cards to provide substantial storage that is both fast and durable.
While details about the release date and pricing of these high-capacity microSD and M.2 SSD solutions are not yet available, it is anticipated that they will be competitively priced to reflect their cutting-edge capabilities.
With the widespread adoption of 8K video content on the horizon, users will soon be seeking the next advancements in resolution and speed.
