Lexar’s Go Portable SSD: For Mobile Content Creators Who Need Space

Designed for use with smartphones and tablets, the Lexar Go Portable SSD is currently seeking backers on Kickstarter.

This plug-in USB-C SSD device is extremely compact and is available in capacities of up to 2TB.

Thanks to Apple’s shift from the Lightning connection to USB-C, Lexar has developed a device that caters to both mobile platforms, expanding the storage for video content during filming.

“Lexar Professional GO Portable SSD with Hub is an absolute game changer.” – Patrick Rambles

The USB-C SSD offers impressive transfer speeds of up to 1050 MB/s (read) and 1,000 MB/s (write) using the USB 3.2 Gen 2 spec.

This makes it fast enough to record ProRes footage from an iPhone directly to the device.

Measuring 1.71x.98x.32 inches (43.4×24.9×8.1mm), the device, when used with the additional Hub, allows the USB-C connector to be plugged into a U-shaped adapter, which is wire-free, allowing it to wrap around the mobile device and be safely positioned out of the way against the smartphone’s back.

The device can also be used without the hub for simple transfer of camera files to the SSD for ingest.

Weighing less than half an ounce (13g), the Go Portable SSD can remain attached to a smartphone even when mounted on a gimbal without the need for rebalancing. Additionally, the hub also includes plugs for an external microphone or power.

Lexar has designed the Go Portable SSD to be pocket-sized when not in use, while being light and compact when deployed on a mobile device. It comes in capacities up to 2TB, is rated against dust and water with an IP65 rating, and offers 256-bit AES encryption for file security.

Pricing and availability:

Lexar has chosen to present the Go Portable SSD through Kickstarter for its initial release.

Early backers can secure a 1 TB model for a super early bird price of $129, which includes the Go SSD, a silicon case, a male-to-female adapter, a storage box, and a 5-year limited warranty.

The 2 TB model is available at an early bird price of $209, or $239 with the Hub. Deliveries are expected to commence in September 2024.

Once the campaign ends in 17 days, the device prices will increase by 30%, starting at $239 and $299 respectively.
