Portkeys has released a new budget-friendly director’s monitor, the Portkeys HS8, which offers directors the ability to view 1080P HD footage from a 4K 60p video signal.
The monitor supports custom LUTS and excels in brightness when used outdoors.
The Portkeys HS8 is an eight-inch HD monitor that can receive 4K video signals at up to 60 frames per second via HDMI.
It also supports SDI at up to 1080p at 60 frames per second and has the option for wireless reception through an optional dual-band CineView wireless module.
With 1100 nits of brightness, the monitor ensures excellent viewing in bright, ambient conditions. It also boasts 10-bit color calibration for accuracy.
The company states that this calibration ensures a consistent color gamut when using multiple screens on set and eliminates color banding.
Additional features of the HS8 include a 16:9 aspect ratio, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, a 178° viewing angle (both vertical and horizontal), and support for 3D Luts to monitor original camera files in the approved color-corrected state. It also includes four function buttons for assigning various monitoring tools and a turn wheel for navigating the monitor’s menu system.
These monitoring tools include:
- 3D LUT monitoring with 3D LUT SDI output capabilities. Custom LUTs can be loaded via the USB-A port at the bottom of the monitor.
- RGB and Luma Waveform/Histogram exposure tools. There is also an adjustable Zebra tool.
- Customizable False Color with 13 different colors, including ARRI False Color.
- Anamorphic image de-squeeze with all the standard ratios (1.33x, 1.5x, 2.0x) and the possibility to enter a custom aspect ratio from 0.25 to 4.0x.
- Peaking and Zoom functions to nail focus easily.
- 3G SDI Level A/B auto output and SDI transform from Progressive to Interlaced capabilities.
- Framing tools: crosshair, check field, guides, grids, rectangle crop.
- Audio meters.
- Monitor adjustments: black level, backlight, contrast, color temperature, sharpness, chroma, brightness, tint, HDR HLG, OSD Flip mode.
The HS8 is powered by a pair of hot-swappable Sony BP-F L Series rechargeable batteries, as well as supporting V-mount batteries or a 720V DC power supply.
There is also a removable and rotatable Sony NP-F power output dummy battery built into the design that provides power passthrough of 8V/10W and can attach and power a wireless video receiver directly at the back of the HS8.
You can rotate this battery power adapter 360° without any tools via the large yellow knob at the center.
It also includes multiple 1/4-20 attachment points for mounting on a camera tripod, or handheld cage. It weighs 675 grams (1.49 pounds) and has dimensions of 208-133.7×50.55 millimeters.
There is even a 3.5mm minijack for headphone audio monitoring.
