Panasonic Unveils Full Frame Lumix S9 Compact Mirrorless Camera

Panasonic has just introduced the new ultra-compact Lumix S9 full-frame mirrorless camera, accompanied by a 26mm F8 L mount pancake lens.

The Lumix S9 features a 24.4 MP full-frame S5II image sensor and utilizes Phase Hybrid Autofocus, combining phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) and contrast-based depth-from-defocus (DFD) technology to track and focus on fast-moving subjects.

The camera also includes 5-axis dual internal in-body image stabilization (IBIS), providing up to 5 stops of camera shake reduction, or up to 6.5 stops of image stabilization with a compatible lens.

For video, the S9 offers various formats appealing to content creators, including the ability to capture 6K video using different codecs such as C4K in 4:2:2 10-bit color at 60 frames per second.

It also supports 6K 3:2 open gate recording with up to 14 stops of dynamic range and features Cinelike D2 / V2 recording for faster post-production.

The camera incorporates a Dual Native ISO of 100/640 for standard recording, or 640/4000 when shooting video in V-Log, and supports frame rates of up to 180 frames per second.

Additionally, it includes an LUT mode for loading custom LUTs with the touch of a button.

Other features include a 30 fps pre-burst mode and a 96 MP handheld high-resolution mode for capturing detailed images. Panasonic has also introduced a new smartphone app, Lumix Lab, to transfer camera files and photos to the web, as well as load LUTs and convert camera files to an MP4 Lite recording mode in H.265 with a 50 Mbps data rate.

The S9 features an 1840k dot free-angle LCD screen that flips out. It is equipped with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can capture up to 470 shots on a full charge and can be recharged in-camera via USB-C. Additionally, Panasonic has designed the S9 to seamlessly work with power banks.

Weighing only 14.2 oz (about 403 g), the Lumix S9 is designed as an ideal lightweight camera for users looking to downsize from bulkier models or transition from using a smartphone for video capture.

A new lens

In addition to the Lumix S9, Panasonic has unveiled the 26mm F8 L mount pancake lens, a manual focus lens weighing just 2 oz (56 g) and offering corner-to-corner image sharpness with a minimum focusing range starting at .82 feet (249 mm).

Panasonic is also developing the compact Lumix 18-40 F4.5-6.3 lens, promising versatility and a wide field of view for content creators.

Pricing and availability

The Panasonic Lumix S9 Mirrorless Camera is available for pre-order at $1499 and comes in Jet Black, Crimson Red, Dark Olive, and Classical Blue colors.

The Panasonic Lumix S 26mm f/8 Lens is priced at just under $200. The camera will be showcased at VidCon this summer, with shipping starting in late June 2024.
