Sigma recently announced the launch of its new 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art Lens, which is touted to be “fast, sharp, and small”. The lens is 30% smaller than Sigma’s 35mm F1.2 Art Lens and boasts a new streamlined optical design.
Weighing 1.6 pounds (745g) and measuring 3.2 x 4.3″ (81 x 108.8mm), the lens is considered the lightest and brightest lens in its class. While it is shorter than the 35mm lens, it is about 2.5 oz (75g) heavier.
It is 14.1 ounces heavier and 1.5 inches (30.8mm) longer than Sigma’s diminutive 50mm F2 Contemporary lens.
The new optical design comprises 17 elements organized in 12 groups, including four aspherical lens elements and high refractive index glass elements. The lens also features a 13-blade lens diaphragm that provides a round and pleasing cinematic bokeh, even when stopped down.
Each lens element is coated with a super multi-layer lens coating to combat ghosting, artifacting, and to improve overall contrast.
The lens is also driven by Sigma dual high response linear actuator motors for super quiet and high-speed focusing control.
These motors make the lens lighter and more compact, without sacrificing the lens’s overall speed performance. This equates to a wide F1.2 maximum aperture for fast shooting and good low-light performance.
Other features of the lens include an angle of view of just under 47 degrees, a minimum focusing distance of 15.8 inches (40cm), and a magnification ratio of 1:6.2.
Additionally, there are physical function buttons and switches for additional features, including an autofocus lock (AFL) button for maintaining focus.
The button can also be customized, while the manual focus ring can be set to linear or non-linear for compatible L-mount cameras.
Meanwhile, the lens aperture ring is lockable and can be de-clicked when shooting video or when absolute silence is required.
Lastly, the lens has all the usual dust and Splash-Resistant Construction to protect it when shooting out in the field.
