Sony has just announced a new FE 24-50mm F2.8 G Lens. The Signature optical line for the camera company’s full-frame platform, promises to “split the difference” between the heavier 24-70mm F2.8 G Master lens and the more lightweight 20-70mm F4 G, giving users all the performance without the heft.
“The demand for light and compact standard zoom lenses is increasing, and our new FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens offers an F2.8 standard zoom option for creators seeking portability, without a sacrifice. It is a lens option ready to go anywhere,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc.
“The FE 24-50mm F2.8 G is our first-ever full-frame F2.8 standard zoom lens in the G series lens lineup.
Bringing the ever-popular F2.8 aperture from our G Master series into the G series is yet another example of our dedication to building lens options for every level of creator.”
As the 72nd lens that Sony has released for its full-frame camera line, the 24-50 promises to be an ideal daily driver for content creators thanks to its lighter compact design which doesn’t sacrifice critical imaging speed or image sharpness.
The lens offers 16 lens elements organized in 13 groups, including four aspherical lens elements to minimize spherical lens aberration and distortion, while two extra-low dispersion elements suppress chromatic aberration and color fringing.
The result is a 1:3 magnification ratio with high-resolution color fidelity and a large, smooth, cinematic bokeh thanks to an eleven-bladed lens aperture.
The lens also enjoys strong close-up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 7.1 inches (18 cm) and has faster autofocusing performance courtesy of G Lens linear motors for a faster, quieter lock-on in both still image and video modes.
Faster autofocus translates into better tracking of subjects which can be kept in view at up to 120 frames per second when paired with the Sony A9 III in full autofocus, or full HD at up to 240 fps.
For video, the lens uses Dynamic/Active image stabilization for supported Sony Cameras and breathing compensation in select Alpha and Cine Alta cameras.
The lens aperture ring can also be set as de-clicked for more silent operation or locked down in the primary A position for camera-based aperture adjustment. Moreover, the lens’ zoom setting can also be adjusted with a custom torque setting to ensure smoother operation.
Other features include a single programmable focus hold button and a focus mode switch for finer focus control.
The lens is dust and moisture-resistant for working in harsher field conditions, and the front lens element has Sony’s seminal fluorine coatings to repel water and keep the optic obstruction-free.
There is also a lens hood that has been redesigned with a smaller diameter and length to add to the camera’s compact vibe.
