Later this month, it is rumored that Nikon will be releasing a firmware update for both the Z8 and Z9 full-frame mirrorless cameras, and the update promises a much-needed new feature.
The update will provide what is believed to be a Pre-Release Burst Mode which will capture images in either JPG or RAW before the shutter is even triggered.
Though Pre-Release Burst mode in JPG already exists in the Nikon Z9, the company wants to extend the feature to shooting uncompressed RAW images as well.
The update will bring a Pre-release burst mode that, once set, will trigger a burst of still images when pressing the shutter button halfway down. The option is also enabled when the AF-ON button is pressed while using the back button focus option.
“Once Pre-Release Burst is set, you can confirm everything is working by looking into your viewfinder,” states Nikon. “At the bottom of the viewfinder, there will be a ‘Pre’ symbol indicating Pre-Release Burst is activated…. a green dot appears, indicating the camera is buffering images.”
When the photographer is ready to capture an image by fully depressing the shutter button, the camera will save one second of the images that were buffered before actually hitting the shutter.”
The update is expected to drop in late December and will be available for download from the Nikon Support Website.
In other Nikon Z8 news, the camera is currently on sale for $300 off. The full-frame mirrorless camera has a 45.7 MP FX-Format stacked CMOS image sensor. This is roughly the same size as a traditional 35mm still image frame from a film camera.
The Z8 is capable of capturing 8.3K Nikon Raw at 60 frames per second, or ProRes Raw at 4.1 K at 60p.It can also capture both 8K30p and 4K120p internally with 10-bit color. Other features include AI-based subject detection, 493-point autofocus, and saving to either Type B CF Express or SD memory cards.
The Nikon Z8 is currently on sale for a $300 discount at $3696.95, or $3846.90 with the FTZ II mount adapter. Add a Nikon 24-120 F4 Kit, users can get another $200 discount from a sale price of $4596.95, or $400 off with a sale price of $4946.90 when adding the FTZ II mount adapter.
