Panasonic has finally delivered its second-generation G9 micro four-thirds mirrorless camera to retailers in the United States.
The camera promises cinematic 10-bit 4K recording with a unique frame marker function that lets users seamlessly use anamorphic lenses for vertical videos and other unique camera angles.
Featuring a powerful new 25.2 micro four-thirds image sensor and updated Venus Processing engine, the Panasonic Lumix G9 II mirrorless camera is designed for content creators looking to capture 4K video for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and more.
It promises rich skin tones with rich tonal gradations and accurate color reproduction.
The G9 II also utilizes Panasonic’s Phase Hybrid AF autofocus for fast and precise focusing and a five-axis sensor-shift Image stabilization to keep the image rock steady while the camera is on the move.
Dual IS 2 offers up to 8 stops of image stabilization when coupled with the 2-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) of Lumix lenses.
There is also Panasonic’s Boost IS which is a digitally based image stabilization technology, and Active IS for correcting camera shake while shooting on the move.
The camera deploys a new AI-powered object recognition technology for identifying and tracking not only human subjects but also animals, cars, motorcycles, and eye detection.
An advanced Focus Transition function automatically shifts the focus point at a constant speed for precise in-focus to out-focus points for a professional-looking rack focus effect.
The camera captures 4K video through DCI 4K and UHD 4K 60p with unlimited recording in 4:2:2 10-bit color, along with C4K/4K 120p video capture in 4:2:0 10-bit color for high frame rate and slow-motion videos.
With a unique frame marker indicator, users will be able to crop vertical videos, even when using anamorphic lenses.
The camera also has V-Log preinstalled for capturing a flat, neutral gaming curve and up to 13+ stops of dynamic range that can be adjusted in post-production. There is also support for ProRes 422 and installing real-time LUTs to streamline the workflow.
The G9 II also supports a frame indicator function that surrounds the image frame with a red border when recording, to help remind the camera operator that the recording button has engaged, or needs to be pressed.
There is also a Vertical Position Indicator to detect and select a vertical video from the menu automatically.
Other features include Bluetooth Low Energy protocols for connecting to a smartphone or tablet, WiFi 802-110b/g/n and a/n/ac support, and connection through the Lumix Sync App for iOS and Android.
There are also USB-C and HDMI Type-A ports, a 2.4mm port, and a 3.5mm headphone and microphone connection.
The Panasonic G9 II is available from Panasonic USA and its network of approved retailers here in the US for a retail price of $1897.99 with free next-day delivery.
There are also three different kit lens configurations for those looking to round out the purchase.
