Sony Unveils Compact BURANO Full-Frame 8.6K Cinema Camera

Sony has announced the BURANO, the latest in the Cine Alta line. A compact full-frame 8.6K cinema camera, the BURANO is designed to be a more affordable and accessible alternative to Sony’s higher-end VENICE 2 camera.

The newcomer features a new large 3.6 x 2.4 cm full-frame image sensor that can record 8.6K footage at up to 30fps and 8.2K footage at up to 60fps.

The BURANO utilizes both full-frame and Super 35mm modes with support for a larger array of lenses, and Sony color science that is designed to produce more accurate skin tones and cinematic colors.

Sony’s Exmor sensor also promises exceptional latitude with up to 16 stops of dynamic range for higher performance in low noise and low light conditions.

Dual-base ISO adds to that low light performance with ISOs of 800 and 3200 for up to 6 stops over to 10 stops under, and 18% middle gray. The dynamic range promises HDR color and details from almost no light to blazing sunlit conditions without clipping.

When using Sony E-mount lenses, the BURANO is capable of autofocus options including Fast Hybrid AF, which deploys a combination of phase detection AF and contrast detection AF, making it ideal for fast-paced shoots with challenging focusing situations.

The camera also supports Human Eye AF and subject tracking when the object is moving around within the scene.

The BURANO also adds in-camera image stabilization supported by both Sony E-mount and ARRI PL Mount lenses, which the company says is a first in digital cinema capture.

Connecting with the same lens mounts as the VENICE, the E-mount lenses offer 5-axis adjustments for pitch, yaw, roll, x, and y stabilization, while the new PL Mount lens feature provides 3-axis adjustments along pitch yaw and roll.

Camera operators can also finetune the adjustments with high, low, and off options.

The camera supports a variety of codecs including Log recording in S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3 Cine. It also supports the new XAVC-H codec, plus XAVC-I and XAVC-L, as well as H.265, and 16-bit X-OCN (original camera negative) for color-accurate images within manageable file sizes. X-OCN also supports multiple resolutions and frame rates up to 8.6K 16:8 at 30 fps.

BURANO comes with four new cinematic looks[i]: Warm, Cool, Vintage, Teal, and Orange, in addition to supporting industry standard s709 and 709 (800%) Look Up Tables (LUTs).

The BURANO also saves to dual media slots, thereby recording in CFExpress Type B cards, plus an additional SD card slot for firmware updates, LUT installation, and other utility functions.

The camera also supports the S700 protocol over ethernet as well as wireless video monitoring on both smartphones and tablets.

The BURANO is also very compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry and transport. The chassis is constructed of a robust magnesium alloy designed to withstand the hardest conditions but can remain extra cool thanks to a redesigned ventilation system that keeps the electronics isolated from dust, sand, and water.

Pricing and availability:

With a preorder list price of $25,000, the SONY BURANO 8K Cinema camera is a more affordable alternative than the VENICE 2, making it a more accessible option for independent filmmakers of all budgets.
