ProRes Raw Video Output Now Supported in Canon R5 and R6 Mk. II Mirrorless Cameras

Canon and Atomos have announced that the ProRes Raw output will now be supported in the Canon R5, R5C, and R6 Mk. II mirrorless cameras.

Through a new downloadable plugin, users will be able to read original camera files and edit them in video editors like Final Cut Pro.

“This new feature for the ProRes RAW ecosystem is absolutely going to change the way people think about recording ProRes RAW,” states Trevor Elbourne, Atomos CEO.

“For the first time, the filmmaker literally gets the best of all worlds: shoot in ProRes RAW with the option to immediately apply camera-specific processing, use standard processing, or customize individual parameters to their own taste.

Atomos states that ProRes RAW is widely regarded as the universal RAW video format. Through the use of plugins, every camera maker can provide their own unique processing that brings out the best quality and unique looks created by their own cameras.”

While Atomos supports over 50 camera models recording in the ProRes Raw format over SDI and HDMI, the company states that Canon is the first camera company to support a dedicated ProRes RAW plugin.

Both the EOS R5 and EOS R5 C full-frame mirrorless cameras can capture high fidelity 8K ProRes RAW up to 30fps, while the EOS R6 Mark II enables 6K ProRes RAW up to 60fps.

Original camera files will then be written and output directly to the Atomos Ninja V, Ninja V+, and Shogun Connect monitor recorders.

The camera plugin can be installed in Final Cut Pro and will enable all the enhanced features available in the supported camera models.

“ProRes RAW becomes, in effect, the conduit for their custom processing,” the announcement continues, “carrying the unique characteristics of any camera, sensor, processing, and lens combination into post-production.”

Through the plugin, users will be able to shoot in ProRes RAW with the option to immediately apply camera-specific processing, use standard processing, or customize individual parameters.

Camera-specific adjustments include custom white balancing, noise reduction, demosaicing, lens distortion correction, and more.

The plugin model is designed to support not only macOS but also Windows and Linux operating systems. Canon R5 and R6 users can download the custom Canon plugin at the Canon USA support site.

Plug-in support is already enabled in the current release firmware for Ninja V, Ninja V+, and Shogun Connect.
