Nikon Announces 24mm F1.7 Z DX Compact Prime Lens

Nikon has announced the new Nikkor Z DX 24mm F1.7 Compact Prime Lens. Designed for APS-C/DX style mirrorless cameras, the super-fast compact prime promises high-resolution imaging in low light, with large, buttery bokeh.

As Nikon’s first prime APS-C lens for their Z-mount DX platform, the Nikkor 24mm F1.7 provides a 35mm equivalent of 36mm, with an impressive 61-degree angle of view and large bokeh for that cinematic, out-of-focus background vibe.

“The quality of the bokeh is unique to fast maximum apertures and allows users to dramatically emphasize their subjects in still-life and portrait photography,” the announcement states.

“The new 24mm f/1.7 also enables the capture of beautiful, high-resolution photos and video in dimly lit conditions, by allowing more light to enter the lens.”

The Nikkor Z DX 24mm F1.7 is constructed with nine elements, including two aspherical elements, organized into eight groups. The lens is also very compact and lightweight for a wide-angle autofocus lens.

So light, in fact, that when combined with the Nikon Z 30, the camera and lens weigh only 540g.

The minimum focusing distance of the 24mm F1.7 is as little as 7 inches (1.8m) with a maximum magnification of 0.19x, allowing users to get up close and personal with subjects and still offer that big background bokeh.

Meanwhile, the lightweight design makes this lens a solid option as a daily driver for content creators and photographers.

The lens has a rounded 7-bladed diaphragm, a 46mm front filter thread, and a super quiet stepping motor for fast focusing with little noise when shooting video.

With an aperture range of F1.7-F11, the lens is fast enough for low light and nighttime shooting while exhibiting very little blur, even while shooting hand-held or at higher ISO settings.

The lens has also been designed to suppress focus breathing and provide smooth focusing without a change in the angle of view, even when the focus point itself changes during recording.

Pricing and availability

The Nikkor Z DX 24mm F1.7 prime lens is available from Nikon Direct and their authorized dealers for a preorder retail price of $279.95 and is expected to ship in mid-June.
