Building the Ultimate Panasonic GH6 Rig

Building a rig is more of an art than a science. It depends on the camera, what parts are available, your everyday shooting needs, the degree of customization required, and plenty more.

We love checking out the various builds and have showcased plenty, like these ones for the Z CAM E2, Sony a7S III, Pocket 6K Pro, among others. One camera we seem to have missed up to this point is the Panasonic GH6. Not anymore as today we are highlighting a sweet rig for it.

Designed for handheld use, this GH6 rig from Pragmatic Filmmaking is a great demonstration of what you can do to maximize the potential of compact mirrorless cameras.

If you’ve seen a few of these rig builds already I think you know where I’m going to start: the cage. He opted for the SmallRig Basic Full Cage for the GH6.

There is a “Black Mamba” variation that is a little more form-fitting, but the extra mounting points were appealing for this build.

To keep the rig going for a long while you’ll need an external power solution.

There are a few options, but in this build we are going with a simple USB-PD power bank. You can have a couple on hand and keep the camera running for hours. Mount that with the SmallRig Universal Power Bank Holder.

Audio is next. For on-camera recording he uses the RODE VideoMic NTG. Since you have a few channels he will also toss on a RODE Wireless GO for good measure. He mounts the NTG with the SmallRig Shotgun Microphone Holder since it doesn’t get in the way of the EVF.

Getting his monitor (or in this case a discontinued Alphatron EVF) up on top he used the SmallRig 2174B Articulating Monitor Mount. You can easily replace the monitor with something of your choice.

This is one of the more unique setups we have seen. It’s also fairly simple. It looks good for handheld use as long as you can deal with the weight. He recommends having a strap for longer days so you can give your arms a break.

What do you think of this rig? How would you modify it? I would personally add an SSD solution for external recording.
