Canon Introduces New Cinema Lenses Ahead of NAB

Fresh off a firmware update that finally yielded the Canon R5C official Netflix Approval, the company has announced a pair of new 8K FlexZoom Cinema Lenses to take full advantage of it.

The Super35mm CN-E 14-35mm T1.7 and CN-E 31.5-95mm T1.7 cinema lenses are designed for shooting professional-grade projects including movies, television, commercials, and more.

The FlexZoom lenses join the series which was first introduced in 2022 and support full-frame digital cameras while expanding into Super35mm aspect ratios.

The lenses are available in both EF and PL mounts and offer 8K HDR optical clarity with a constant T1.7 aperture for powerful bokeh and depth of field and low-light performance throughout the entire zoom range.

The lenses have coated glass elements for reduced chromatic aberration and ghosting, with a 2.5x-3x zoom ratio respectively, and an 11-bladed iris for a soft, cinematic bokeh.

The lenses also have a consistent .08 MOD gear placement for use with industry-standard matte boxes and accessories. The lenses also offer advanced Cooke i/ metadata pass-through and display support crucial for modern post-production.

Through consistent gear placement, a front diameter size of 114 mm, and a gear rotation range of 300°, the Flex Zoom lenses can easily switch between each other with a minimum of setup or adjustment.

Using Canon’s Flex Zoom Relay Kits, the lenses can be adapted to full-frame sensors as needed, offering a level of flexibility for camera operators who don’t wish to carry around multiple sets of cinema optics when just one will do.
