Sony Introduces New 50mm F1.4 G Master E-Mount Lens

Sony has launched a new 50mm F1.4 G Master Lens which the company says offers extraordinary resolution, beautiful bokeh, and fast autofocusing. But in spite of its top speed and sharpness, the lens is remarkably lightweight and compact for a high-end prime lens.

“This prime lens is a great option for both photography and videography use and delivers excellent image quality at 50 mm,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President of Sony Imaging Solutions.

“Being able to pack our latest G Master technology into such a compact form factor brings ultimate versatility to a 50 mm for Sony.”

By focusing on spherical aberration control, Sony has designed a lens that uses two extreme aspherical lens elements, as well as a single extra-low dispersion glass element that effectively suppresses chromatic aberration to achieve high resolution and sharpness without color bleeding.

The elements also have Sony’s proprietary Nano AR Coating II to suppress reflections and lens flare, even in a backlit scene.

The lens also incorporates an eleven-bladed circular aperture which produces a naturally rendered bokeh with sharp realism at the maximum aperture range.

The bokeh also makes the subject stand out from their surroundings with a deep, creamy image in a variety of shooting scenarios.

The minimum focusing distance of the 50mm F1.4 G Master Lens is .41 meters (16.14 inches), with a maximum magnification of .16x when using autofocus.

The autofocus is 1.9 times faster than competing designs with similar specs and uses Sony’s high-thrust XD linear motors that make the lens fast and responsive.

The XD linear motors rely on a precise control algorithm to measure distance and vibration to create a precise distance result with quiet operation, especially when shooting video.

Sony has also formulated an algorithm to deal with focus breathing to insure that the camera does not hunt around the image and cause the audience to notice. The lens also has switches to lock the Iris, switch between auto and manual focus, and render clicking silently.

The 50mm F1.4 G Master Lens is lightweight, at just 516 grams (18.2 ounces), making it about 33 percent lighter than competing models.

This makes the 50mm F1.4 G Master Lens a great option for mounting to cameras on drones and gimbals. Its overall dimensions are 96mm (3.78 inches) in length and 80.6mm (3.17 inches) in diameter.

With a 67 mm thread mount. This means that users of other G-Master lenses, including the FE 24mm F1.4 or the FE 35mm F1.4 will be able to use the same filters for this lens as well.

Sony has also added their fluorine coating to repel dust, fingerprints, water, and other contaminants, and offers sealings against dust and moisture in harsh weather conditions.

Pricing and availability

The retail price of the Sony 50mm F1.4 G Master Lens is $1299.99 US and $1799.99 CAD. It will be available throughout North America from Sony Authorized dealers beginning in May 2023.
