Tilta’s New Camera Grip Boosts Battery Life as Well as Ergonomics

Tilta has released a new battery grip which has a rechargeable 50Wh rechargeable battery built in.

The additional power source can feed 60 watts of power into your camera through a short USB-C connection, extending camera battery life up to 170% of that of the onboard camera battery.

The new grip, called the Left Side PD Handle with Run/Stop Type VIII (isn’t that a mouthful) jas a NATO attachment to connect to any camera with a compatible receiver, and there are other mounting options planned.

The handle can also be tilt adjusted according to the camera operator’s preferences by using the latch to release the tilting, changing it, and then locking it back down.

The grip is built with an all-metal ergonomic design with non-slip coverage and a leather adjustable strap for better handle security.

The PD Handle also has a cold shoe mount for adding other accessories like an external microphone or video light.

The grip also has recording and play controls which can trigger camera recording and video playback through the USB-C connection that also provides power.

There is also an M3 screw that can lock down a USB-C cable, to prevent it from being pulled out. Lastly, there is a 1/4-20 thread with locating points to support other attachable accessories or mounting options.

Inside the grip is a Panasonic 14.4v 3500 mAh battery that can connect to a camera via a USB-C cable.

The battery also supports PD quick charging protocol and is capable of operating in a temperature range of -4° F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C).

The PD Handle can also function using a dummy battery in the main battery cell housing of the camera itself. The overall weight of the entire unit is 480g.

Tilta states that the Left Side PD Handle has extended shooting times on Canon R series mirrorless cameras, Panasonic Lumix Mirrorless cameras, and even the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera by up to 170 percent.

Translated into real numbers, battery life while shooting in 4K can be stretched from around 35 to 110 minutes on the Canon R series, and up to 145 minutes on the Panasonic S5 II.

The Sony FX3 gets an insane 245 minutes of total shooting time, not including standby time when connected to the Left Side PD Handle.

All that extra battery time makes the retail price around $199, a small price to pay to keep the camera rolling while on location.

However, if users act fast, they can get the Tilta Left Side PD Handle with Run/Stop Type VIII for twenty dollars less if pre-ordered by February 9th.

Shipping is expected within two to three weeks after that.
