Venus Optics has announced a new Laowa 19mm F/2.8 Zero-D Medium Format Lens. The ultra-wide piece of glass is one of the smallest lenses in its class, with a weight of just 546 grams, and a length of just 3.14 inches (80mm).
Compact in its design, the Laowa19mm F/2.8 ultra-wide lens has an angle of view of 110 degrees, zero distortion, and a minimum focusing distance of just over 7 inches (18cm).
The lens can also create a 10-point Sunstar that comes from a five-aperture-bladed iris when stopped down.
The 19mm F/2.8 GSM lens has an optical construction that consists of 12 glass elements organized in 10 groups, the 19mm Laowa includes 2 Aspherical Lens elements, 3 Extra-low Dispersion elements, and one ultra-high refractive index glass element to help to control distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
With the Focusing Scale Adjustment System, shooters can calibrate exactly on the infinity mark, making it helpful when shooting in the field, especially at night when doing astrophotography.
The lens has a 77mm filter thread, as well, which can work with native-mounted circular filters without the need for a filter holder.
The lens is designed for a Fujifilm GFX medium format mount, but can also work with a full-frame camera system with an appropriate adapter.
The lens is the equivalent of 15mm on a full-frame camera and can capture details in low-light environments without having to push the ISO which could invite more noise to the image party.
Venus Optics says that the lens is extremely helpful when shooting in tight spaces, and can create an exaggerated sense of extension to an image.
It also has an aperture range of F/2.8-22, and Zero Distortion, which the company says exhibits close-to-zero optical distortion and will preserve straight lines in architectural photography and shooting cityscapes while also providing better background separation with the subject.
The Laowa 19mm f/2.8 Zero-D GFX is currently available to purchase for $999 at the Venus Optics official website and through all authorized resellers.
There are also new lenses that include the Laowa 4mm f/2.8 Fisheye (Canon RF), Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D (Canon RF), Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO (Canon RF), Laowa 12-24mm f/5.6 ZOOM (L mount).
There’s also a new Magic Shift Converter (Canon EF to Canon RF, Canon EF to Nikon Z and Nikon F/G to Nikon Z). All available on the VenusOptics website.
