Since its inception in 2013, the RØDE VideoMicro External Microphone has been a source of professional-grade audio for content creators, whether using a dedicated camera or smartphone.
Now, the next-generation VideoMicro II offers improved performance, a redesigned new shock mount design, and a simplified plug-and-play form factor.
“The VideoMicro was groundbreaking when it was released almost a decade ago,” said RØDE CEO Damien Wilson.
“Never before had creators been able to record crystal-clear audio with a microphone as compact, lightweight, and easy to use … and we are excited to now update the VideoMicro with next-generation features for today’s creators.”
The VideoMicro II has a super-cardioid polar pattern for what RØDE says is “highly directional audio capture,” that ignores ambient sound from the side and rear.
The mic promises natural, full-bodied sound thanks to the annular line tube design and rugged, all-metal body with high-performance circuitry that effectively eliminates self-noise while improving sound sensitivity.
The VideoMicro II also comes with both foam and deadcat furry windshield for effectively dampening out wind noise while recording outdoors, or in other complex audio environments.
But the most central new feature is the HELIX isolation shock mount system, which is specifically designed for VideoMicro II’s new updated compact and lightweight design.
It is crafted from molded thermoplastic that effectively dampens out knocks, bumps, and handling noise as the camera moves.
The Helix system also has a built-in cold shoe mount for connecting to a camera but also has a 3/8 inch tripod connection to attach to a boom mic for more remote audio capture or to other accessories.
The mic is also designed with plug-and-play connectivity that relies on no additional controls, thereby making it easy to use.
The mic relies on phantom power and comes with a premium curled TRS 3.5mm cable for camera connections, and a TRRS cable for smartphone connections.
The VideoMicro II is compact at 3.15 inches (80mm) long, .87 inches (22mm) in diameter, and weighs a paltry 39 grams. Its frequency response is 20Hz-20kHz, and it has a dynamic range of 95 dB.
And the price? You can’t beat it at $79. That makes it an ideal tool for content creators and YouTubers looking to vastly improve their audio quality when shooting selfie-style videos from smartphones, action cameras, or pocket-sized camera platforms.
