Lexar Announces 320 GB Type A CFExpress Card

Lexar has just released a new 320 GB Type A CFExpress Card with declared read/write speeds of 900 MB/s and 700 MB/s respectively. The card represents the largest Lexar Professional CFExpress Type A card in the lineup, joining the previously released 160GB and 80GB models.

Lexar says that the new Gold Series Type A card is rated for video performance guarantee or VPG 400 and is designed to provide more saving space to eliminate the need to constantly switch media cards during filming.

The VPG 400 rating refers to a constant writing speed that will not dip below 400 MB/s, but Lexar has tested the design which achieved an average write speed of 550.4 MB/s and a peak of 671.3 MB/s.

The test results represent performance that is considered well above the VPG standard, but slightly below the much-hyped maximum rating of 700 MB/s that the company says the card will maintain without dropping a single frame.

Even at the lowest metric, the card is considered faster than Type A cards produced by Sony or ProGrade Digital.

However, all that performance does come at a cost, with the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type A Card GOLD Series 320GB media card having an MSRP of $720, and is exclusively bundled with a high-capacity CFExpress card reader. Sony, however, offers a larger 640GB Type A model.

By contrast, a similar Lexar Pro Gold series 160GB card is priced at $369, with a two-pack also available for a retail price of $697. The 80GB model sells for just under $200, with a two-pack available for $347.

Doing the math, it’s only slightly cheaper to buy the largest capacity card, rather than multiple smaller cards. Smaller cards, while having to be swapped out more often, do offer the benefit of greater reliability.

Should a card fail, then it’s only a quick swap to a secondary backup before users are back up and running again.

Then again, in today’s modern camera-to-cloud environment, swapping out media cards is largely an archival function to serve as a backup for original camera files, should the network connection be unavailable or fail due to congestion.
