7Artisans Releases Low Cost 4mm F/2.8 APS-C Fisheye Lens

Lens manufacturer Shenzhen 7Artisans Photoelectric Technology Co., Ltd. has announced a new fully-manual 4mm F/2.8 APS-C circular fisheye lens which can be used on both APS-C and compatible drone cameras. The lens offers a 35mm equivalent of 6mm with a 225° field of view.

Designed with 10 lens elements organized in eight groups, and incorporates a seven-bladed aperture array with a de-clicked aperture ring for smoother iris adjustments. The aperture range runs from F/2.8-F/16.

The lens’s minimum focusing distance is three inches (8.5mm) with a magnification factor of .11. Taking advantage of the fisheye style field of view, the 4mm F/2.8 is able to capture a full 360° panoramic view in just two to three shots.

The result of this circumferential view is an immersive feel when shooting close to the subject, while further separating the background.

Users can also create a “tiny planet” viewpoint popular in video games and 360 video clips, for a “god’s eye” perspective.

The lens is crafted with a full metal body, yet remains lightweight and durable for carrying in a pocket or camera pouch while out in the field.

The lens is only just over two inches (54mm long) and weighs a paltry seven ounces (201g).

The lightweight construction also makes it an ideal ultra-wide-angle option for use with compatible drone cameras like the DJI Zenmuse X5 MFT drone camera.

Other lens mount options include Sony E-Mount, Fujifilm FX-Mount, Canon EOS-Mount, or other micro four-thirds-based camera platforms.

Although, it’s important to remember that this lens lacks not only autofocus but any digital communication. So if used from a remote configuration like a drone, there will be no options for adjustment or writing of metadata to the image file.

However, what may be its most salient feature is the affordable price. The 7Artisans 4mm F/2.8 APS-C circular fisheye lens has an MSRP retail price of just $150, making it a fine affordable option in the camera bag for those occasional shots which don’t come along too often but would be sorely missed when needed.

The lens is currently only available from the 7Artisans store but should hit authorized dealers in short order.
