Chinese Lens Manufacturer NiSi Optics has an affordable line of cinema-grade optics, but recently, the company announced its second still image lens design, a 9mm f/2.8 Sunstar Super Wide Angle ASPH Lens.
The lens is for APS-C and Micro 4/3s camera systems and offers a 35mm equivalent of 13.5 mm with a 113-degree field of view. But there’s also support micro four-thirds platforms with an 18mm 100-degree field of view.
Constructed with 14 lens elements arranged in 12 groups, the fully manual 9mm f/2.8 Super Wide Angle ASPH Lens includes two double-sided aspherical lens elements and four extra-low dispersion elements.
The lens also has a 10-bladed aperture with a straight-bladed design which produces smooth bokeh and Sunstar effects. Its minimum focusing distance is just under eight inches (.2 meters) and it enjoys a clickless aperture range of f/2.8-16.
NiSi also says that thanks to the lens elements it has included, the 9mm f/2.8 produces optimal center-to-corner sharpness with low distortion and chromatic aberration with easy-to-correct images for any remaining issues.
A SA+ anti-reflection film coating also reduces lens flaring and stray light and offers minimal vignetting. The lens also has a low coma, making it ideal for astral photography.
Here are a few cool sample images showing the effectiveness of the design:
The lens also has weather sealing with yellow rubber gaskets at the bayonet connection to keep the lens sealed against moisture, dust, and dirt.
The all-metal construction also features a 67mm standard filter thread that supports the NiSi 100mm filter system.
The lens weighs only 12.8 ounces (364 grams), making it both light and compact for travel-based photography. The lens also comes with models supporting mounts for Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Fuji X, and micro four-thirds.
Currently listed on backorder due to its preorder popularity, the NiSi has a retail price of $459 and comes with a two-year warranty when purchased from authorized dealers. Shipping is expected to begin in late October.
