Nikon has announced a new Nikkor Z mount 17-28mm f/2.8 constant aperture lens as the latest addition to their growing catalog of Z-mount constant speed lenses. The lens promises an ultra-wide angle of view, pleasant bokeh, and improved low light performance.
“The new NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is derived from the same mutual concept as the recent NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 lens,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc., ”establishing a series of affordable zooms that open a gateway to fast-aperture performance and absolute versatility.”
Wide enough to capture stunning landscapes without distortion, yet light enough to use for vlogging and use of gimbals, the new NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 has the versatility needed for content creators to capture their imagination in either still or video formats.
Constructed out of thirteen lens elements, organized into eleven groups, the Nikkor 17-28mm f/2.8 includes two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, a single SuperEd glass element, and three aspherical elements, for maximum image quality across the entire focal range.
The lens also has nine diaphragm blades arranged to create a rounded aperture iris opening for a pleasant bokeh and beautifully blurred backgrounds.
The high-speed silent autofocus stepping motor promises fast focusing speeds while minimizing focus breathing while shooting video. The minimum focusing distance begins at 7.56 feet (.19m). The angle of view breaks down as 79°-53° in DX format, or 104°-75° in FX format.
The constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the entire lens focal length makes it ideal for capturing landscapes, interiors, and low-light images, but the lens can also capture at a maximum aperture setting of f/22. There is also a clickless control ring that provides smooth exposure transitions.
The lens all-weather construction measures 3 inches wide by 4 inches long, with a weight of 15.9 ounces (450 g). It has a 67mm threaded filter mount for circular polarizers and neutral density filters and includes an antifouling coating on the front element to repel dirt, smudges, and fingerprints.
The NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 Z mount lens will be available in late October 2022 for a retail price of $1,199.95.
