Sony has announced that a firmware update is coming to the Sony FX9 in October. The update will bring several new features to support Sony’s Camera to Cloud C3 portal.
Firmware version 4.0 will add enhanced Camera Connect Cloud (C3) functions including the ability to import LUTs directly to the camera from the cloud to the 6K Full Frame FX9, as well as automatically uploading hi-res video proxies through an automatic upload.
Users will also be able to import directly to the camera any files necessary or export them to the cloud.
The benefits here are that the camera operator won’t have to use a data card to load any look-up tables (LUTs) for use during principal photography. They just need to connect to the C3 portal, select the files, and download them. Then the LUTs will be available on the menu for the application.
Moreover, vs. 4 also provides improved workflow management and audio features including an audio level meter indicator switching option to switch from channel 1.2 to channel 3.4 and back. The Audio Monitor Selection will also be assignable to custom hard-wired buttons on the FX9.
Camera operators will also be able to select slow and quick motion frame rates, as well as Proxy recording by default. The LED lamp can also be assigned a custom button for turning it on and off.
Admittedly, this isn’t the sexiest firmware update Sony has announced, but it may be one of the most functional considering the camera-to-cloud revolution that has enveloped the industry, shortening the post-production window that film projects currently enjoy.
Sony undertook the update in response to user feedback of the features they would like to have to streamline their workflow even further and take full advantage of the benefits of Sony’s C3 portal for camera-to-cloud.
And it’s refreshing that a corporation as large as Sony is listening to its clientele and is nimble enough to open up the functionality of its cameras even further than first imagined. It’ll be interesting to see what features the FX9 gets next as part of Sony’s firmware roadmap.
Until then, firmware update vs. 4.0 will be available as a free download from the FX9 Download site in October of 2022.
