Tokina Unveils 11-18mm F2.8 APS-C E-Mount Lens

Tokina has just announced a new 11-18mm F2.8 E mount lens for Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras.

The atx-m lens has a full-frame equivalent of 17-27mm, representing the first super wide-angle lens Tokina made for the mirrorless format and is designed for users who shoot both stills and videos.

The atx-m 11–18mm F2.8 E is built out with 13 lens elements in 11 groups, two of which are aspherical and two that are super low dispersion glass elements.

The elements are coated with Tokina’s special anti-reflective coating to minimize ghosting and lens flares and make images both high contrast and low distortion.

With a 9-bladed rounded lens iris aperture, the atx-m 11–18mm F2.8 E promises a nominal, soft bokeh, and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5 inches (19cm).

While the constant speed is F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, the lens also has a manual aperture range of F2.8-F22.

Tokina has also designed the lens to use their ST-M stepping motor for quiet and accurate autofocus, complete with support for a camera’s internal image stabilization, Eye AF autofocus mode, and in-camera optical corrections.

The lens also has a manual focusing ring for manual focus and manual focus assist mode.

Other key features of the atx-m 11-18m F2.8 E mount lens are:

  • 11-18mm super wide-angle zoom for dynamic landscape and architecture.
  • Compact and lightweight design to carry while traveling, or attaching to gimbals.
  • The optical design provides rich color reproduction, low distortion, and low light fall-off.
  • Silent ST-M motor unit for fast and precise auto-focusing operations in still and video modes.
  • Micro USB port (Type B) for firmware updates.

Dimensionally, the lens is 2.9 inches (74mm) long, with an equivalent lens diameter and 67mm front filter thread. The lens has an overall weight of 11.8 ounces (335g).

Tokina also states that due to its lightweight and compact design the lens is an ideal accessory for shooting landscapes, group photos, environmental portraits, architecture, automobile photography, street snaps, documentary videos, and vlogging.

Though Tokina doesn’t mention the retail price in their announcement, the atx-m 11–18mm F2.8 E has a reported retail price of $699 (€799 EUR).

However, B&H is currently listing it for $100 less. The lens comes with a two-year warranty, storage box, a cleaning cloth, front/rear lens caps, and a lens hood. It will be available starting September 16, 2022.
