Tamron has announced the development of a faster aperture 20–40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD Zoom Lens. Known internally as Model A062, the full frame 20-40 Di III VXD has a fast F2.8 across the entire zoom range and is optimized for effectively shooting photography and video, chiefly creating vlogs and other video content.
The camera will use Tamron’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive (VXD) linear autofocus motors for high speed and precision plus superior quietness and performance. The lens will have fast hybrid AF and Eye Detection AF as its main autofocus scheme, and the zoom ring rotation is a short 65 degrees.
Its zoom range of 20-40mm makes it ideal for shooting everything from landscape and architectural photography at the wide end to everyday shooting, and selfie video logging at the 40mm max range.
The minimum focusing distance is expected to be 6.7 inches with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8, making it also a valuable option for close range or macro photography.
With a length of 3.4 inches and a weight of just 12.9 ounces, Tamron proudly states that it is the smallest and lightest zoom in its class. Tamron states in its press release that the lens was “born from the unbridled desire to produce a compact size that can be carried around easily.”
Its lightweight will also make it popular with those who shoot on handheld gimbals, where time-consuming rebalancing after changing lenses isn’t necessary. With this single lens, Tamron says that users won’t miss a shot.
The lens will also be scratch and moisture resistant with improved texture and fluorine coating to combat dust, water droplets, and grease due to heavy use. The filter size is 67mm consistent with other lenses in the Tamron catalog.
The lens will also be easily updatable with firmware updates through Tamron’s Lens Utility software, which also does double duty for adjusting the Focus Ring Function settings.
There’s no word on pricing yet, but Tamron is expecting the 20–40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD Model A062 Zoom Lens to launch by the late fall of 2022.
The company cautions, however, that due to the global chip shortage and Covid pandemic, the release date could possibly slip, or the lens availability may be initially limited when launched.
