Sony has just announced a firmware update that expands the function of the Xperia Pro and Xperia Pro-I smartphones to provide external monitoring and camera control for Alpha mirrorless cameras. The update also adds several tools including Livestreaming, Wave Form, and False Color tools.
Furthermore, this software allows creators to use their Sony Alpha cameras to live stream 4K video with the same quality as the Alpha camera’s HDMI output through their Xperia Pro and Xperia Pro-I android mobile devices, as well as being able to check exposure and RGB balance during the stream through the waveform monitor function.
The False color function also provides iris setting selection in Alpha mirrorless cameras.
Meanwhile, Xperia Pro users can also trigger record and stop functions of their Alpha cameras by connecting the device with a USB-C cable, as well as getting status updates for REC status, shutter speed, aperture settings, ISO, and EV functions.
The device offers a full screen read out and focus can also be checked by pinching in and out to zoom on the Xperia Pro’s 6.5-inch high-definition OLED screen.
Live streaming is available through YouTube and other platforms and takes advantage of the mobile 5G network of the smartphone, without necessarily using a third-party camera to cloud service, with full 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second. Users can also publish the content across social media services using Sony’s RTMP protocol.
To enable the external monitor feature, users go into settings, then device connection, and then connection preferences. Under External Monitor, users just need to enable the app.
Connecting Alpha cameras to the Xperia Pro and Pro-I devices can be accomplished through a USB Video class output with a USB-C cable, or through a video device that supports HDMI with an HDMI-UVC conversion adapter for maximum video quality and resolution.
Users relying on an Xperia Pro-I or even the Xperia 1 IV, may also need to use a dedicated USB cable and activate USB streaming in your Alpha camera menu.
From there, to go live, it’s simply a matter of inputting the necessary live streaming login information for the streaming service being used, verifying the settings, and save. Then press the green button and the stream is live.
The firmware update is available for the Xperia Pro, Pro-I, and even the 1IV, by push notification, so chances are, it’s already automatically updated to the phones. All that’s left to do is connect and go live.
