Cooke has begun shipping what will become their flagship line of sixteen full-frame cinema prime lenses. The Cooke S8/i lens line was developed through feedback from seasoned cinematographers in the industry, and promises to create more realistic and film-like images, particularly with modern digital cinema cameras.
“We are very proud to reveal the new S8/i FF series, built as always with cinematographers in mind. The lenses have been designed and produced in a smart way using an all-spherical design which provides an organic, filmic aesthetic to accompany the latest digital film cameras.”
Tim Pugh, CEO of Cooke Optics
Cooke states that the spherical lenses are designed specifically for modern digital motion capture, with optimized contrast, an organic feel, and clean bokeh.
Cooke also adds that the new S8 line was inspired by the S4 primes of the 1990s, which many hold to be the dawn of the iconic “Cooke look” as a cinematic gold standard.
The lenses are designed to be all spherical, with no asphere elements and a high speed across most of the focal lengths in the collection.
They also have a larger image circle than the S4 primes, while Cookie’s patented /i technology for transmitting metadata such as focal length, t0stop, shading, and situation mapping, as well as inertial motion data, which can be used in virtual productions.
Focusing is handled through Cooke’s award-winning cam-style focus movement coupled with the benefit of a large lens barrel diameter, and a four-point contact bearing for a smooth positive backlash-free movement.
The lenses are capable of a minimal focus of between 22 inches and four feet, and a focus rotation of 270°.
The lenses also have a 9-bladed iris an aperture range of T1.4-T22, a consistent front diameter of 104 mm, and an average weight of between 4.6 and 7 pounds.
The lenses are available in either PL or LPL mounts and have a retail price of $34,650 each. The S8/i line began shipping this summer with the first seven of 16 planned focal lengths, including 25mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, and 135mm lenses.
An additional nine focal lengths are scheduled to ship by late fall and will include 18mm, 21mm, 27mm, 35mm, 65mm, 85mm MACRO, 180mm, 250mm, and 350mm.
