Sony has updated the FX3 Full Frame Cinema Camera, giving it more shooting profiles and the ability to import LUTs to streamline the post-production workflow. The firmware also offers timecode sync through the use of a proprietary adapter cable.
Launched early in 2021, the FX3 Cinema Camera incorporates many of the features and functions of the Sony A7SIII full-frame mirrorless camera.
With a 10.2 backside illuminated Exmor R BSI CMOS image sensor and Bionz XR processor, the FX3 is capable of capturing 4k video at up to 120 frames per second in 10-bit 4:2:2 color, or 16-bit color through HDMI out.
The camera captures at a data rate of up to 600mb/s and supports Sony’s S-Cinetone, SLog2, SLog3, Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG), and Rec 709 color profiles. It also enjoys an impressive iso range of 80-409,500.
Firmware Update 2.00, provides even more shooting profiles, greatly expanding SLog 3 to include Cine El, Cine El Quick, and Flexible ISO modes. The Flexible ISO mode enables the FX3 to change ISO settings while filming from 800-12800 for minute exposure adjustments.
Sony says the addition of Cine EI and EI Quick modes can produce more balanced details in the highlights and shadows by harnessing even more of the wide latitude of S-Log3. Users can also apply LUTs to preview what the footage will look like before moving to post.
Speaning of LUTs, the FX3 can now import lookup tables (LUTs) like Sony’s S709, and even personal custom LUTs for greater creative freedom. The LUTs can be used in preview mode, as well as embedded into the metadata of the file itself for use during color grading when registered as a picture profile in the camera settings.
There are also several housekeeping adjustments to make the camera menu structure easier to navigate. These fixes include a new list-style main menu, a metadata function that requires Sony’s Catalyst Browse and Prepare app to enable, and an instant function menu accessible by swiping up on the camera’s articulating touch screen.
The update also provides a timecode sync feature when connected through the dedicated Sony VMC-BNCM1 adapter cable, autofocus assist feature, and a new standby movie screen mode to view the scene unobstructed.
The Version 2.00 firmware update is available for download directly from the Sony FX3 support page. The Catalyst Browse and Prepare app will also need to be updated, and the link is there as well.
