DJI Joins L-Mount Alliance and Adds ProRes 4444 HQ Recording to Ronin 4D

DJI has joined Leica and Panasonic’s L-Mount Alliance. With the stated goal of giving all cameras a “unified lens mount for all cameras,” the L-Mount Alliance assures the same Leica L-Mount lens can be used on cameras from Leica, Leitz Cine, Panasonic, and Sigma, with DJI becoming the fifth platform to adopt the lens standard.

“DJI PRO continues to collaborate with industry professionals while enhancing our products to cater to their evolving needs,” states the press release. “As of today, DJI is officially a member of the L-Mount Alliance and has partnered with Leica to introduce the exclusive Zenmuse X9 L-Mount Unit, enabling Ronin 4D users to fit Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma L-Mount lenses onto their cameras.”

DJI’s first product to adopt the L-mount lens standard will be the DJI Zenmuse X9 L-mount interchangeable lens mount plate which is attached to the DJI Ronin 4D Cinema camera unit.

The combination of the Zenmuse X9 lens mount plate with the Ronin 4D recording unit makes for a very unique camera that incorporates a gimbal array into the camera system without the need for a third-party option.

The Zenmuse X9 will enable Ronin 4D users to attach Leica, Leitz Cine, Panasonic, and Sigma L-mount lenses to the unique 6K ad 8K cameras. Before the alliance, the Ronin 4D was limited to the DJI DL mount, Leica L mount, and Sony E-mount lenses.

There’s no word on how much the Zenmuse X9 L-mount interchangeable lens option will cost, but since the E-mount and M-mount plates are around $300, it’s a good guess that the L-mount will be in that ballpark. Availability is to be determined.

Additionally, DJI also announced the Zenmuse X9 extension cable, which allows for mounting the Zenmuse X9 onto extended and complex camera mounting configurations.

Conceivably, this means that both the Ronin 4D and the X9 can be used separately, connected by the cable, and giving the camera operator the option of carrying a lighter-weight rig.

DJI also announced that the Ronin 4D will be receiving a firmware update soon, which will give the camera the ability to capture in ProRes 4444 HQ, Apple’s highest-resolution imaging codec. The update is expected to drop in August of 2022.
