Sony has added to their already massive lens lineup with a trio of compact hybrid lenses that will certainly give content creators the best possible image, whether shooting stills or video. The three APS-C lenses are the Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G, versatile G lens E 15mm F1.4 G, and the ultra-wide prime E 11mm F1.8.
Many still photographers are expanding their services to include shooting video, as well as still images. The result is that they are becoming hybrid content creators who not only showcase their products to select corporate and private clientele but also online through portals like YouTube and Instagram.
To that end, creators want a set of lenses that can handle both, in order to keep their bags lighter and their wallets fuller. There really is no need to double up on lenses if there’s a good design that can handle both video and stills. That’s the market that Sony is going after.
“In recent years, we’ve seen growing customer demand for video and vlogging products that are lightweight and include creator-driven features,” said Yang Cheng, Sony’s Vice President, Imaging.
“We see the APS-C platform as the perfect option for these video-first and hybrid creators, and we’re dedicated to creating new products that will allow them to capture and create in ways they never could before.”
Let’s take a look at the three lenses that could be some of the smallest APS-C lenses Sony has ever offered:
Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G
Designed with vlogging and a selfy obsessed culture in mind, the Sony 10-20 f4 PZ G Ultra wide-angle zoom provides a smooth, wide-angle field of view, with limited lens distortion, and what the company claims is the best image quality in its class.
Edge-to-edge image sharpness is maintained with two ED glass elements and one ED glass aspherical element. It enjoys minimal focus breathing and extremely fast focus tracking from dual linear motors.
Meanwhile, being 46% lighter at just under 6.2 ounces, the Sony 10-20 f4 PS G makes for an ideal choice when working with a gimbal. The retail price is $750.
Sony E 15mm F1.4 G
The Sony 15mm f1.4 G can best be described as a prime lens for video professionals. Super fast and accurate focusing, plus a seven-bladed aperture for cinematic bokeh, the lens can be de-clicked with on-body lens controls.
It can focus as close to just under 7 inches (.17 meters) manually and like the 10-20mm f4 zoom, is nearly half as light as the competition.
The suggested retail price is $740.
Sony E 11mm F1.8
Designed to appeal to the content creator on a budget, the Sony 11mm F1.8 ultra-wide prime is fast and affordable.
With three aspherical lens elements bringing edge-to-edge image sharpness without any fisheye-like distortion, and a linear motor system for fast and reliable autofocus.
The lens also enjoys the same 7-bladed aperture iris as its 15mm cousin and can focus as close as 5.9 inches for those tight closeups.
The suggested retail price for the Sony 11mm F1.8 is $550.
All three lenses will be available in July.
