When it comes to balancing budget with performance, SIGMA has traditionally offered the Ying and the Yang of that equation with their low-cost lenses with uncompromising performance.
Now they’ve added a new SIGMA 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary wide-angle zoom lens to their expanding lens catalog, and it looks to take users a step beyond the typical kit add-on.
Designed to achieve the perfect balance between sharp optics, constant aperture, and lightweight construction, the 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is both compact and robust, able to work well in both still photography and video work.
With inner zoom and focusing mechanisms driven by a high-speed stepping motor, the 16-28 F2.8 fits squarely in a space sorely needed by L-Mount and Sony e-Mount lenses.
Of the 16 elements arranged in 11 groups, 5 are FLD low dispersion lens elements and four aspherical lens elements (two of which are large diameter).
This array ensures the highest quality image without the effect of chromatic aberration. Sigma has also crafted a zoom mechanism that can keep the lens balanced throughout the entire focal length, by keeping the center of gravity constant.
And on cameras that support it, the Contemporary 16-28mm F2.8 offers lens aberration correction. The feature is usually in the menu settings and automatically compensates when turned on.
The lens elements enjoy super multi-layer coatings to counter lens flare and ghosting, and to provide a professional grade high contrast in backlit conditions.
The 9-bladed iris can also maintain a constant F2.8 across the entire focal length, providing a smooth, circular bokeh, and blurry depth of field, whether shooting extreme close-ups or portraits.
Other great features of the lens include:
- Compatible with high-speed autofocus
- Support for DMF and AF+MF
- Petal-type lens hood (LH756-01)
- Mount with dust and splash-resistant structure
- Compatible with SIGMA USB DOCK UD-11 (sold separately; L-Mount only)
- High-precision, durable brass bayonet mount
The lens is just under 4 inches long (100.6mm) and only weighs 450g. This makes the SIGMA 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary a great lens to deploy while the camera is on the move with a gimbal.
The lens also supports switching between linear and non-linear focus ring settings on L-Mount lenses.
The retail price for the SIGMA 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary lens is $899 and it’ll ship later this month.
