To take advantage of 12-bit Raw Recording using the Atomos Ninja V/V+, Leica has issued its own firmware update for the Leica SL2-S.
Not only does the update open up the pathway to send 12-bit Raw recording at 60 frames per second over HDMI to the Ninja external recorder, but Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR users can also take advantage of the new feature. But that’s not all.
In addition to enabling the SL2 to record 12-Bit Raw DNG files, firmware version 3.0 for the Leica SL2–S and firmware version 4.0 for the Leica SL2 provide a host of new features and screen tools in order to improve camera performance.
Chief of which is improved face detection autofocus with eye prioritization. The shooter can select which eye the camera will lock on to and keep in focus.
Furthermore, SL2 owners also now have the option to move the autofocus area around the image, back and forth to the center of the frame.
There’s also an exposure and depth of field preview option that can be programmed into the custom function button for compatible L-mount lenses, an exposure and depth-of-field preview button, increased the number of functions that can be assigned to the custom function (FN) button on compatible SL-System lenses, and precise ISO sensitivity control through either the front settings dial or thumbwheel.
The ISO selection can be adjusted to 1/2 or 1/3 stop increments.
Users can also pair the SL2 and SL2-S with the Leica Fotos app and geotag their images with greater accuracy. Lastly, users can choose to turn off the power saving mode, so that the camera can record longer, a good option for long-form interviews.
In a similar vein, users can also set a timer for the camera to automatically disconnect from WiFi, which is called WiFi sleep mode.
Lastly, users can rate their images in the camera, using the joystick, a feature that will surely save time down the road when seeking to triage which photos to keep and which to send to the trash bin. There are also several housekeeping updates and bug fixes.
Firmware update 3.0 for the Leica SL2-S, and firmware update 4.0 for the Leica SL2 are now available on the respective product pages at www.leica-camera.com.
