FiLMiC Pro Brings 10-bit ProRes Log to the iPhone with Recent Update

With its most recent update, smartphone app developer FiLMiC Pro is also opening up Log3 to bring 10-bit color to the iPhone with ProRes. But it’s going to cost you.

Update 6.19.0, FiLMiPro now supports Flat+ and Log V3+ gamma curves while shooting in ProRes, but only after purchasing the FiLMiC Pro Cine Kit through in-app purchase. For those who have already purchased the CineKit upgrade, the update is free.

Along with being able to use those curves to expand color grading with 10-bit features, the update also brings Frame.IO’s remote Camera to Cloud feature to the iPhone.

The C2C feature enables mobile filmmakers to upload a high-resolution proxy of the full resolution video footage so that editing can begin, even while principle photography continues.

Moreover, there are three different settings, depending on how good the Cellular or wifi connection is on set. Users can choose between 720p (1.5Mbps), 1080p LQ (3Mbps), and 1080p HQ (10Mbps).

All three settings will incorporate the metadata of how the original footage was shot, giving editors and color artists a leg up in grading the footage in 10-bit Log3, even before the footage is delivered and ingested into the media workflow.

Other features include:

  • RGB Channel Adjustment
  • Shadow/highlight recovery
  • Tonal curve selection
  • white/black point adjustment
  • Frame.io C2C Upload

The CineKit upgrade is for $13.99. If you haven’t bought FiLMiC Pro yet, the cost of the app is $14.99.

Once downloaded and installed, the option to purchase the CineKit will be in the Imaging button in the lower left of the interface (the three overlapping colored circles).

Once clicked, select the Gamma icon (2nd from the bottom) and then click on the words More Information.

The same can be under settings, and then the Frame.IO button. Through either window, it will bring up an in-app purchase popup, which will be used to buy the CineKit and install it on your iPhone.

Users must also subscribe to Frame.IOs collaboration service or Adobe’s Creative Cloud in order to use the Camera to Cloud option. If not a subscriber, the Log3 function will still be available to use.

The 10-Bit Log SDR function is available for all iPhone 12 and above mobile devices and select Android devices. See the comprehensive list on the FiLMiC Pro website.
