Sony Announces New 24-70mm F2.8 GMII E-Mount Lens

Sony has announced their highly anticipated FE 24-70 F2.8 GM II constant aperture lens. The lens is the 67th design to join the E-mount line up and Sony says it should be one of the most versatile lenses in that category.

Designed for photographers, videographers, and other content creators, the FE 24-70 GMII is the product of feedback by those professionals who steadily rely on the 24-70 focal length to capture images and videos within that range. With a constant F2.8 aperture, down the entire focal range, this lens is Sony’s answer to the modern needs of a shifting art form.

“… our customers’ needs have changed,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “Knowing the 24-70 mm focal length is extremely popular, it was imperative that we continue improving to bring our most advanced technology to such a critical lens in our customers’ kit.”

The FE 24-70 GMII promises sharp, detailed resolution with the same iconic circular bokeh that shooters have come to love in the Sony G Series. It features five aspherical lens elements, including two XA extreme aspherical elements, and two extra-low dispersion lens elements, plus a pair of Super ED glass elements.

With a redesigned eleven-blade aperture iris, the lens will provide depth of field and bokeh throughout the entire zoom range with a circular pattern. When combined with Sony’s new floating focus mechanism, the lens controls chromatic aberration and distortion, providing detailed resolution across the entire image frame, even with the lens set wide open.

The 24-70 design can achieve a closeup distance of 8.25 inches at 4mm, and 12 inches at 70mm, with a maximum magnification of .32x. The lens is also coated in Sony’s original Nano AR coating II for uniform anti-flection and subduing of lens flare and ghosting.

Filmmakers are bound to appreciate the quiet operation of the FE 24-70 GMII, which utilizes XD Linear motors to zoom smoothly and quietly with reduced focus breathing. The lens also incorporates Linear Respond manual focus, to make repeated manual focus precise and easy to manipulate.

There are also two programmable focus hold buttons and the aperture ring has clicked on/off and iris lock switches to keep from moving out of focus or depth of field unexpectedly. The lens is also designed with the center of gravity close to the camera for improved handling.

Lastly, Sony has designed the 24–70 GMII to be one of the smallest and lightest zoom lenses in the category, with a lens length that has been reduced by 18%, and an overall weight that is 20% lighter than the competition. Total dimensions are 87.6mm in diameter by 120mm long and weighs in at only 695g (1.53lbs). The lens filter diameter is 82mm.

The price of the FE 24-70 GM II is $2,300 USD with an expected shipping date of June 24th.
